The ExxonMobil hydrogen plant in Baytown to produce 1 billion cubic feet of hydrogen per day

ExxonMobil is planning its first world-scale plant for the production of low-carbon hydrogen at its refining and petrochemical facility at Baytown, Texas.

Production of up to 1 billion cubic feet per day of hydrogen made from natural gas is expected at the facility, with over 98% of the associated CO2 to be captured and safely stored underground once the project starts up in 2027-28, the Energy Digital Magazine reported on 14 August. This would result in the largest low-carbon hydrogen project in the world.

“Our planned #hydrogen facility in Baytown, TX, will produce 1 billion cubic feet of hydrogen per day, helping decarbonize processes in heavy-emitting sectors and reducing our own CO₂ emissions, too”, the ExxonMobil announced it its LinkedIn.

“We predict its use at Baytown could reduce site-wide CO₂ emissions by up to 30% compared to current operations. When combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrogen gets produced with a lower lifecycle carbon footprint than natural gas. the company said.
