SK Secures Land for $15 Billion Canadian Green Hydrogen Project
The renewable energy unit of South Korea’s Sk.Ink secured a site required to develop a $15 billion green hydrogen project in Canada that’s set to be one of the world’s biggest, The Bloomberg reported on 3 August.
SK ecoplant Cо., received approval to use 1,078 square kilometers (670 square miles) of Canada’s state-owned property, known as Crown Land, to harness wind energy to develop the green fuel, it said in a statement. Once the project reaches its final phase, it will convert green hydrogen into 1.08 million tons of green ammonia per year. The land that SK is allowed to use will enable the company to expand the project to phase 3, the fully operational stage, it said on Sunday. The facility will have a 4-gigawatt wind power plant that will produce 180,000 tons of green hydrogen per year.

HH2E presented the 100 MW green hydrogen production plant project at the site of the former nuclear power plant in Lubmin
The area was once home to a nuclear power station that is currently being dismantled by EWN .
On the same premises, HH2E plans to build a green hydrogen production plant.The initial phase will have a capacity of 100 MW by 2025, scalable to 1 GW by 2030. At the exact location where the new site will be built, HH2E co-founders Alexandr Voigt and Andreas Schierenbeck shared insights into HH2E’s green energy evolution plans with the to Steffi Lemke, the German Federal Minister of Environment and members of the delegation, the HH2E announced on 1 September.

Fabrum to supply 1MW electrolyser Hydrogen Refuelling Station package for Obayashi Corporation
New Zealand company Fabrum has been selected by Japan-based Obayashi Corporation as the supplier of a Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) package for a refuelling station project in Auckland.
Fabrum’s flagship 1MW electrolyser Hydrogen Refuelling Station enables hydrogen production via electrolysis and renewable power. The system utilises Fabrum’s cryogenic technologies alongside a Membrane-Free Electrolyser (“MFE”), developed by UK-based CPH2 and manufactured under agreement by Fabrum, to create a hydrogen production system.
In a first for Fabrum and New Zealand, the Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Auckland will feature a unique dual pressure dispensing system that enables the refuelling at 350 bar and 700 bar.

Sunreef Yachts developed a sailing yacht with hydrogen generator on board

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has begun demonstration testing of the Ammonia Gas Abatement System for Ships
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., is currently developing the Mitsubishi Ammonia Supply and Safety System (MAmmoSS®), an ammonia handling system to support the utilization of ammonia as marine fuel. As part of this development project, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has begun demonstration testing of the Ammonia Gas Abatement System (AGAS), a subsystem of MAmmoSS® to safely treat surplus ammonia.
Using the AGAS demonstration facility at the Nagasaki District MHI Research & Innovation Center, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will conduct demonstration tests of the processing performance under various scenarios simulating onboard ammonia operations.
Ammonia is an inorganic compound of nitrogen and #hydrogen with the formula NH3.

Californian Santa Cruz Area Buying 57 Hydrogen-Powered Buses
Santa Cruz Metro is expected to finalize the purchase of 57 hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses in a matter of weeks and it will be the single largest purchase for that variety of zero-emission vehicle in the nation, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported.
“I think the board really has chosen a hydrogen path,” Santa Cruz Metro CEO Michael Tree told the Sentinel.
According to Tree, only $918,000 of the $88 million it costs to purchase all 57 buses is local money, specifically from the 2016 Measure D transportation sales tax. Typically for these purchases, a local authority will spend 20% of the total while receiving 80% of funding from state and federal partners, he said.

The China’s first large-scale green hydrogen project with photovoltaic power completed
China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (“Sinopec”)
completed the construction of the Sinopec Xinjiang Kuqa Green Hydrogen Pilot Project, the company announced.
The project is China’s first large-scale utilization of photovoltaic power generation to produce green hydrogen directly.
Utilizing the abundant solar resources in Xinjiang, the Project has an electrolyzed water hydrogen plant with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons, a spherical hydrogen storage tank with a hydrogen storage capacity of 210,000 standard cubic meters, and hydrogen transmission pipelines with a capacity of 28,000 standard cubic meters per hour.

Four Japan companies aim to establish a hydrogen supply chain in Osaka
Mitsui & Co., Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation and The Kansai Electric Power signed a MOU regarding a joint study to establish a hydrogen* and ammonia supply chain based in the Osaka coastal industrial zone, the companies stated.
Discussions have already begun with Kobe Steel, Ltd., which is a potential candidate that could benefit from the utilization of ammonia as it has announced a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality in the electric power business.

French government earmarks €4 bln for low-carbon hydrogen
The French government will release €4 billion in subsidies in the form of public-private contracts for the development of low-carbon hydrogen projects as part of the country’s updated national hydrogen strategy, the Euractive reported.
France has now put its strategy out in the open, with its government announcing on Monday that it would adopt a decree in the coming weeks, releasing a €4 billion cheque to subsidise the development of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity as part of the €9 billion in public support announced at the end of 2020.
This decree aims to support several projects with a total capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW), or around 140,000 tonnes of production per year, according to Maxime Sagot, head of hydrogen public and regulatory affairs at Electricité de France (EDF), the French state-owned power utility.
The first electrolyser is expected in 2026.

Hyundai to produce clean hydrogen using biogas generated during a food waste treatment process
Hyundai Motor Group announced that it will start producing clean hydrogen using biogas generated during a food waste treatment process. The effort will help support the establishment of a green hydrogen ecosystem.
The Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) attended by officials from Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Corporation, Hyundai E&C and the Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation (SL Corp.).
The agreement aims to demonstrate a system that can produce 216 kilograms of green hydrogen per day by utilizing biogas produced by the SL Corporation over the next two years. This is enough to charge more than 34 units of NEXO, Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle.

EC publishes terms & conditions ahead of hydrogen bank pilot auction
European Commission published the Terms and Conditions (T&C)for its pilot auction dedicated to European renewable hydrogen production.
The auction will award up to €800 million to renewable hydrogen producers in the European Economic Area (EEA)
The auction, funded by the Innovation Fund under the umbrella of the EU Hydrogen Bank, is intended to open on 23 November 2023.

Sunfire secures €170m to expand series production of green hydrogen electrolysers
German producer of large-scale electrolyzers, Sunfire announced that received support for scaling up its technologies as part of the “Important Projects of Common European Interest” (IPCEI). Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck and Saxony’s Minister for Economic Affairs Martin Dulig personally handed over the 169-million-euro grant notification.
Sunfire is using the grant money to establish the first industrial series production of its electrolysis technologies. “Thanks to the grant, we can proceed faster and much more extensively than we would be able to with our own financial resources,” explains Sunfire CEO Nils Aldag, adding.” Sunfire is investing around 400 million euros in setting up industrial series production of its technologies and validating them in Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia.

EKPO secures contract with H-TEC SYSTEMS to develop next-generation stack components for use in PEM electrolyzers
EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies GmbH and H-TEC SYSTEMS GmbH have entered into a contractual agreement for the development of stack components for PEM electrolyzers. EKPO will contribute its expertise in development, large-scale production of stack components, and defect reduction in the context of highly automated operations. The development, which has already started, and the production of the prototypes to be supplied under the agreement will take place in Germany.
The newly developed stack components will be designed specifically for use in electrolyzers in the megawatt range.

Metacon and Uppvidinge Vätgas opened wind-powered hydrogen refueling station
Sweden’s first public hydrogen refueling station for both heavy vehicles and passenger cars with hydrogen produced with electricity from its own wind turbine was inaugurated on in Älghult in Småland.
Uppvidinge Vätgas AB has ordered the construction of a hydrogen refueling station (HRS) from Metacon AB supported by a grant from Klimatklivet,the Metacon announced.
The station has integrated hydrogen production for refueling with both 350 and 700 bar pressure (for heavy vehicles and passenger cars, respectively). At the wind turbine powered by Uppvidinge Hydrogen, an electrolyser with auxiliary equipment has been installed for the production of green hydrogen. The plant has a capacity of 200 kilograms of pure hydrogen per day.

Hyzon made the first commercial run over 540 miles with a liquid hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle
Hyzon Motors Inc., a high-power hydrogen fuel cell technology developer and Performance Food Group, Inc. , one of the largest food and foodservice distribution companies in North America, and Chart Industries, Inc., a manufacturer of highly engineered equipment servicing multiple applications in the clean energy announced successful completion of Hyzon’s first commercial run with a liquid hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (LH2 FCEV).
Starting in Temple, TX, the truck completed deliveries to eight PFG customers near Dallas, TX, travelling over 540 miles on a 16-hour continuous run including over 100-degree Fahrenheit temperatures.

HydrogenPro confirms FEED study with Fortum and SSAB at 700MW factory
Hydrogen Pro is participating as part of Fortum’s FEED study , launched earlier this year. Fortum, a Nordic energy company from Finland, and SSAB, a Swedish specialized steel producer, are to explore the possibilities of producing direct reduced iron with green hydrogen in Raahe, Finland. The launched FEED study includes exploring the possibility of a hydrogen production plant with a capacity of 700 MW. HydrogenPro’s part of the FEED study is at least 200 MW. The study is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024, with the following FID expected in the second half of 2024.
This is the second FEED study reported by HydrogenPro in the last month, and the company’s ongoing FEED studies constitutes now more than 1.2 GW.

The government of Newfoundland and Labrador announceed companies advancing in wind-hydrogen process
The government of Newfoundland and Labrador has selected four companies to develop projects with converting wind power to clean hydrogen in the Canadian province, with potential capital spend estimated at C$66.3 billion (US$49 billion).
Andrew Parsons, minister of Industry announced on 30 August the completion of the call for bids for wind-hydrogen development in the province. As a result of this process, four companies will receive Wind Application Recommendation Letters:EverWind NL Company, Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation, Toqlukuti’k Wind and Hydrogen Ltd. (ABO),andWorld Energy GH2 Inc.
The construction, operations and decommissioning phases of these four projects (ranging from 35 to 40 years) are anticipated to have an overall economic impact (GDP) of $206.2 billion, and revenue to the province of $11.7 billion. Based on the plans for the four projects, peak employment is estimated at 11,694 full-time equivalents during construction. Total capital spend is estimated at $66.3 billion.

Ovako to inaugurate its plant to produce hydrogen for heating steel before rolling
Ovako, the European manufacturer of steel is inaugurating the hydrogen plant at its Hofors mill. The Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson will inaugurate the facility on-site on September 5th 2023.
Ovako’s hydrogen plant is the world’s first facility for producing fossil-free hydrogen to heat steel before rolling, the company stated. The plant in Hofors is also Sweden’s largest electrolysis plant.The 20 MW plant will generate 3,880 cubic meters of fossil-free hydrogen per hour, as well as producing oxygen. In addition to steel heating, the fossil-free hydrogen will be used for fueling fuel cell-powered trucks. The investment of around 180 million SEK is supported by the Swedish Energy Agency through “Industriklivet”.

Zepp.solutions secures €2 million grant funding to build fuel cell systems factory
Dutch Zepp.solutions successfully secured a €1.98 million grant from the European Just Transition Fund (JTF) for the development of a cutting-edge fuel cell systems factory, the company announced. The factory, to be established in the Greater-Rijnmond regionThe factory will be dedicated to the production of zepp’s Y50 and X150 fully integrated hydrogen fuel cell modules. Current applications include the Rotterdam Watertaxi, excavators for construction as well as a 67-meter long inland shipping vessel. EnBW acquires 10% equity stake in the green ammonia project and secures exclusive offtake rights
EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) has entered into an investment agreement with one of Europe’s most advanced project for emission-free ammonia production, Skipavika Green Ammonia (SkiGA), in Western Norway, the company announced.
The investment agreement underscores EnBW’s strong commitment, allowing exclusive long-term offtake rights to green ammonia and reflecting this through a 10% equity stake in the project. This commitment by EnBW will play a crucial role in expediting the project’s path to a financial investment decision.
Ammonia can be either converted to hydrogen for combustion in heat and power generation or directly used for this purpose, the EnBW said.

Groupe E has produced the first green hydrogen molecules in Swiss

Hynion wins approval for new hydrogen refuelling station in Sweden Västerås
The building committee in Västerås has decided to grant Hynion a permit for the new construction of a hydrogen refueling station at the STOP128 truck stop in Västerås, the Hynion announced. It is one of two stations for which Hynion has been granted a grant from the Swedish Energy Agency and which is to be completed in January 2024.
As previously communicated, Hynion has been granted a grant of SEK 61.4 million from the Swedish Energy Agency to build two hydrogen refueling stations with a capacity of 1,500 kg of hydrogen per day. One station is to be built in Västerås, at the STOP128 truck stop, right next to the E18, and the other station is to be built in the Torsvik logistics area in Jönköping. Both stations are to be completed in January 2024.

The Hyster® Reachstacker is an innovative zero-emission solution that uses Nuvera E-Series Fuel Cell engines to convert hydrogen into electricity. The hydrogen is stored in high-pressure tanks and can be refilled less than 15 minutes. The hydrogen fuel cell charges the batteries, which power the electric motors and hydraulic systems, enabling the reachstacker to lift laden containers with comparable performance to a diesel alternative.
The Hyster® Reachstacker will be tested and validated in live operation at the MSC terminal in Valencia, one of the largest container terminals in Europe.

Australian asset services provider Worley and In collaboration with Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment have developed a new action plan for the renewable hydrogen sector which, if broadly adopted, could reduce delivery times for hydrogen projects by 40%.

Sugar Valley Energy and STARS Technology collaborate to ptroduce clean hydrogen at its sugarcane to ethanol and power project
Sugar Valley Energy (SVE), a subsidiary of California Ethanol & Power, LLC (CE+P), and STARS Technology Corporation (STARS) have announced a groundbreaking collaboration agreement to deploy cutting-edge hydrogen production technology at SVE’s planned, fully permitted 160-acre sugarcane ethanol biorefinery, bioelectric, biogas and wastewater treatment facility in Imperial Valley, California, the CE+P stated.
The SVE-STARS agreement envisions the deployment of up to 80 STARS-250 H2 Generators, producing low-cost, renewable hydrogen that meets the new Federal Clean Hydrogen standard. These generators would be installed at SVE’s low-carbon ethanol plant that will produce more than 70 million gallons of low-carbon ethanol each year. The hydrogen generators would also potentially be installed at nearby hydrogen fueling stations.

Hydrogen operation test in Vienna: First interim success achieved with 15 percent H2 admixture
Wien Energie, RheinEnergie, Siemens Energy and VERBUND are testing the admixture of hydrogen in a gas turbine in the Donaustadt power plant for the first time – first test days successful, the Wien Energie announced.
The operational test has been running since mid-July, and the project partners can already report the first interim successes: The proportion of hydrogen in gas turbine operation has already been increased to 15 percent by volume on individual test days.
Further tests will be carried out in the coming weeks in order to collect more data on the operating behavior of the plant. The project partners will evaluate the data in detail by spring 2024. In a follow-up project, there are plans to increase the proportion of hydrogen to around 30 percent by volume. The project partners are investing around 10 million euros in the operational test, and the climate and energy fund is supporting the project with around 2.6 million euros.

FuelCell Energy and ExxonMobil to continue fuel cell technology d
FuelCell Energy, Inc., ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company (EMTEC) have agreed to extend their ongoing joint development agreement through March 31, 2024, the three companies announced on 28 August. The extension enables further development related to manufacturing scale-up and work towards advancing the carbonate fuel cell technology for point source carbon capture applications against a broader set of carbon capture opportunities including lower carbon intensity flue streams. Thyssenkrupp Nucera: Sales almost doubled to €187.5 M, driven mainly by its alkaline water electrolysis
Thyssenkrupp Nucera laid out growth plans reporting strong sales and operating income, as the company works to meet growing demand for the green hydrogen hailed as key to decarbonising the German economy, the Reuters reported on 28 August.
“Another strong global workforce expansion is planned and necessary to achieve our growth targets,” Chief Executive Werner Ponikwar told reporters after presenting quarterly results.
The company wants to expand production with new locations, including in India.
While in its infancy, so-called green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy, has been identified as a key energy source in the push towards a lower-carbon economy in Germany and other European Union countries.
Reporting its first financial results since going public, Nucera said earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose 59% year-on-year to 7 million euros ($7.56 million) in the third quarter of its 2022/23 financial year.
Sales almost doubled to 187.5 million euros, driven mainly by its alkaline water electrolysis, where investors see potential for the business to scale up quickly.

DNV releases guidelines to validate low-carbon and renewable hydrogen and ammonia attribute claims
DNV, the independent energy expert and assurance provider, has announced on 28 August the release of its new service specification, DNV-SE-0654, which delineates DNV’s procedures for verifying claims made by companies about the production and distribution of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.
This new service will enable hydrogen producers to document and demonstrate compliance with applicable standards, ensuring the credibility and transparency of their claims, and allow for the validation of their systems or products based on specific characteristics – like the requirement to keep greenhouse gas emissions below a predetermined limit.

Schaeffler has developed a new generation of metallic bipolar plates for PEM fuel cells
Fuel cell stacks with new metallic bipolar plates by Schaeffler exceed the power density of stacks made with previous-generation plates by about 20 percent, the company announced.
At a pilot plant in Herzogenaurach, Schaeffler is already making the plates for vehicle manufacturers to use in prototype and small-series production.
Every aspect of the plate’s design has been engineered for maximum ease of transition to large-series production.
Schaeffler is demonstrating its development capabilities in the field of hydrogen-powered mobility with a new generation of metallic bipolar plates for PEM fuel cells.

The Queensland’s government has unveiled the first look at the Stanwell Clean Energy Hub with hydrogen units
To begin the transformation of the Stanwell Clean Energy Hub, publicly owned energy company Stanwell Corporation will build the Future Energy and Innovation Training Hub (FEITH) valued at up to $100 million.
The size of a shopping centre, the hub will provide the sandbox to test out innovative new energy technology including wind, solar, #hydrogen and battery storage.
It will also provide a real-life, hands-on training environment for Queensland energy employees to develop the skills needed to work on renewable energy technologies.
The project is proposed to be delivered in phases, starting with the establishment of common infrastructure and civil works in late 2023.
