Sanlorenzo Yacht presented hydrogen-powered  catamaran 

American Magic’s hydrogen-powered chase boat was presented as a world premiere on the Sanlorenzo Yacht Bluegame stand at Cannes Yachting Festival 

Named BGH-HSV for Hydrogen Support Vessel, this 10-meter flying catamaran  will accompany the American challenger’s AC75 on the Barcelona  race course next year. It is equipped with two REXH2® systems from EODev, which will jointly supply with batteries the energy needed to reach the highly symbolic speed of 50 knots.

Siemens Mobility completes first test runs with hydrogen train in Bavaria

Siemens Mobility has completed the first test runs with the Mireo Plus H hydrogen-powered train in Bavaria, the company stated. The two-car trainset will enter passenger service in mid-2024 on routes between Augsburg and Füssen and Augsburg and Peissenberg on the rail network of Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB). Pilot operations of the train are planned for 30 months and are supported by the State of Bavaria. Siemens Mobility and Bavaria signed the corresponding development partnership in 2021. The Mireo Plus H is a state-of-the-art hydrogen-powered train based on Siemens Mobility’s proven Mireo regional train platform. Two roof-mounted fuel cells and a lithium-ion battery ensure completely CO2-free mobility. The H2 energy supply system, combined with the electric drive, provide high 1.7 MW traction power for acceleration of up to 1.1 m/s² and a top speed of 160 km/h. The train has an operating range between 1,000 and 1,200 kilometers with one tank filling.

Australian metals company Fortescue proposes $2 billion green hydrogen hub in Prince George

Global green energy and metals company Fortescue has taken a step toward establishing a major green energy hub in Prince George.The project is led by Australian businessman Dr. Andrew Forrest, the executive chairman and founder of Fortescue.

The company has submitted an initial project description and early engagement plan with the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office proposing the construction of a large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. The project would be a $2 billion capital investment and has the potential to result in a wide range of benefits for the local community including more than 250 direct jobs during the construction phase, and over100 permanent, direct jobs during the operations phase of the project.

The proposed facility would be situated at the Willow Cale Industrial Park in Prince George.

The company said the green ammonia and green hydrogen produced from the potential 1000 MW facility could be exported or used domestically to reduce fossil fuel use and help meet climate targets in B.C. Canada and globally.

SCZONE signs a cooperation protocol with a Dutch consortium to establish green hydrogen production plants

Suez Canal Economic Zone, the Dutch consortium and Rotterdam City signed a cooperation protocol, aiming to attract investments in establishing green hydrogen production plants and facilities, the SCZONE stated. The produced green fuel will be used for supplying all kinds of vehicles. In addition to transporting and exporting green fuels to European markets through dedicated pipelines, that’s achieving Egypt’s vision of reducing carbon emissions and developing the green fuel derivatives sector. According to this protocol, the Dutch government will provide technical support for studies on these projects.

Element Resources to build one of California’s largest renewable hydrogen production facilities in the City of Lancaster 

The City of Lancaster  announced the formalization of its partnership with Element Resources through a new MOU.

The City and Element Resources will collaborate on developing hydrogen economy infrastructure such as hydrogen fueling stations for light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, supplying hydrogen locally and working with other partners to expand the broader hydrogen production chain. The project, located within Lancaster’s city limits, is less than 100 miles from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and will supply end-users throughout the greater Los Angeles Region. Element Resources will produce 20,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually through its first phase, which is one of the largest green hydrogen projects in the state.

Giant Spanish green hydrogen project lowers ambitions

One of Europe’s largest planned renewable hydrogen projects, Spain’s HyDeal Espana, has halved its electrolyser capacity targets and will come on line nearly three years later than planned, the Argus reported on 14 September.

HyDeal Espana will now reach 3.3GW of installed electrolyser capacity by 2031, developer HyDeal’s president Thierry Lepercq said today at the World Hydrogen and Renewables Iberia conference in Madrid. This constitutes a sizeable reduction from 7.4GW initially targeted for 2030.Hydrogen output is now expected at 150,000 t/yr, down from 330,000 t/yr.

Associated renewable power assets have been downsized accordingly. HyDeal is now targeting 4.4GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity by 2031, down from 9.5GW previously envisaged for 2030. The plant’s targeted start-up has been pushed back to 2028 from the end of 2025.

Bosch plans to repurchase and recycle its fuel-cell stacks when their useful life expires

The platinum recovered will be used in new Bosch stacks

Bosch aims to repurchase stacks when their useful life expires, the company stated on 14 September. 

“By recycling, we can make the stacks more economical and at the same time reduce the carbon emissions associated with platinum mining,” says Thomas Pauer, the president of the Bosch Powertrain Solutions division. “We’re already laying the groundwork for recovering rare raw materials like platinum. Our estimates suggest that by 2030 at the latest, appreciable numbers of fuel cells will need recycling,” he adds.

Universal Hydrogen received certificate for the conversion of airliners powered by liquid hydrogen modules and a fuel cells

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) accepted Universal Hydrogen’s application for a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the conversion of ATR 72 regional airliners powered by Universal Hydrogen’s patented liquid hydrogen modules and a fuel cell-electric propulsion system, the company stated. Furthermore, the FAA has now issued the G-1 Issue Paper, an important document that is a key step in establishing the certification criteria, including tailoring of applicable airworthiness and environmental standards, required by the FAA to ultimately certify the Universal Hydrogen design for ATR 72 conversion to hydrogen power.

Air Liquide announced an investment of over €400 M for the construction of its Normand’Hy electrolyzer

On the occasion of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to supply the TotalEnergies refinery in Gonfreville, Normandy, France, with renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, Air Liquide announces an investment of over 400 million euros for the construction of its Normand’Hy electrolyzer, with a capacity of 200 MW.

As part of this agreement, the Air Liquide Normand’Hy electrolyzer will deliver to TotalEnergies’ refinery in Gonfreville, over the long term, from the second half of 2026, renewable and low-carbon hydrogen equivalent to an electrolysis capacity of 100 MW. The remaining 100 MW will be dedicated to customers in the Normandy industrial basin, as well as for the development of low-carbon mobility.

To supply Air Liquide Normand’Hy, TotalEnergies will generate up to 100 MW renewable electricity to power the electrolyzer, volume corresponding to the hydrogen delivered to its refinery. For the remainder of the electrolyzer’s electricity needs, Air Liquide plans to sign long-term renewable Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), completed with low-carbon energy from the French power grid.

TECO 2030 and Pherousa Green Shipping signed supply agreement to realize hydrogen powered deep-sea shipping

TECO 2030 and Pherousa Green Shipping AS sign green package supply agreement for up to six modern, zero-emission Ultramax dry bulk carriers of about 63.000 deadweight tons each. Each vessel will be equipped with 12 megawatts (MW) of TECO 2030 fuel cells for main propulsion onboard. 

The TECO 2030 delivery scope is a green package approx. worth EUR 23 million per vessel. The delivery for TECO 2030 includes a complete system of fuel cells installed on a skid solution as well as power and automation equipment and is estimated to start shipment to shipyard by early-2026, with delivery in mid-2026. The fuel cell system will go into production at  Innovation Center in Narvik, Norway at the end of 2024.

The TECO 2030 fuel cell system will be installed in combination with a Pherousa Green Technologies AS (PGT) ammonia to hydrogen cracker. Bunkering ammonia and cracking to hydrogen on board the vessel will solve the present storage and infrastructure challenges of hydrogen as a marine fuel and thus paving the way for zero emission deep-sea shipping.

TotalEnergies Launches a Call for Tenders for the Supply of 500,000 tons per year of Green Hydrogen

As part of the drive to decarbonize its European refineries, TotalEnergies is launching a call for tenders for the supply of 500,000 tons per year of green hydrogen, the company announced on 14 September.

TotalEnergies has six refineries in Europe – Antwerp (Belgium), Leuna (Germany), Zeeland (Netherlands), Normandy, Donges and Feyzin (France) – as well as two biorefineries in La Mède and Grandpuits (France), all of which use hydrogen. The Company wants to replace 500,000 tons per year of this hydrogen consumed in its refineries with green hydrogen produced with renewable energies by 2030.

CAETANOBUS and TEMSA Collaborate to launch an electric Hydrogen-Powered Coach 

The collaboration between CaetanoBus and Temsa has led to the development of an exceptional electric hydrogen-powered coach that will operate with hydrogen refueled at 350 or 700 bars (H2 Dual System) offering unique flexibility for the operator to refill the vehicle in any available hydrogen refueling station in the route without any constraint. The H2 coach is the autonomy with a single refilling of up to 1000 km, which can vary depending on the operation and weather conditions. The first coach to be launched in 2024 will be a 2-axle based on the electric version of Temsa HD12 to accelerate time to market of pre-serial in 2024 and serial production from 2025, but the 3-axel coach is also part of the plans immediately after.

The British government revealed two hydrogen projects 

They are Bay Hydrogen Hub – Hydrogen4Hanson and HYDESS project (Hydrogen for the decarbonisation of Sheffield steel).

The ‘Bay Hydrogen Hub – Hydrogen4Hanson’ project will support decarbonisation of the asphalt and cement production industry and develop nuclear derived hydrogen production at Heysham 2 power station, the government said.

The ‘Hydrogen for the Decarbonisation of Sheffield Steel” (HYDESS) project is assessing the technical and commercial feasibility for end-to-end hydrogen production, transport and end-use in the steel manufacturing industry, the government stated.

A full set of the fuel tanks for one truck will contain up to 95 kg of liquid hydrogen, which will increase a vehicle range till 1200 km on a single refueling, the  European company COOLERGY announced. 

“Our goal is to contain the maximum possible amount of liquid hydrogen in a minimum volume, while providing our customers with the opportunity to use the services of different hydrogen suppliers, i.e. accept liquid hydrogen at high and low pressure. The first pipes for GET H2 Nucleus project has delivered in German Lingen 

Delivered steel pipes will be used to create a transport hydrogen in the south of German Lingen, the Nowega announced. The line is intended to connect the electrolysis plant to the GET H2 infrastructure that RWE aims to build in Lingen. An important next step for electrolysis was taken this week with the approval from the Oldenburg Trade Inspectorate. 

 The EU notification as a prerequisite for the funding decision from the federal and state governments within the framework of the #IPCEI program is still pending for the pipeline as well as for the electrolysis. The notification should be available by the end of this year. 

The GET H2 partners bp, Evonik, Nowega, OGE and RWE Generation want to jointly build the first publicly accessible hydrogen infrastructure. The GET H2 Nukleus project connects the production of green hydrogen with industrial consumers in Lower Saxony and NRW. The approximately 130-kilometre network from Lingen to Gelsenkirchen is to become the first H2 network in the regulated sector with non-discriminatory access and transparent prices.

Elogen signs a new contract with Valmax to supply a 2.5 MW electrolyser for a mobility project in Korea

Elogen, a GTT group company, announced the signature of a new contract with Valmax Technology Corporation (Valmax), a system integrator for energy solutions in the hydrogen sector, to design and manufacture a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser with a power of 2.5 MW. This is the second contract signed between Elogen and Valmax in the framework of the collaboration agreement signed in May 2022 to supply electrolysers in South Korea to produce green hydrogen.

The electrolyser, with a production capacity of up to 1 ton of hydrogen per day, will be part of a mobility project located in Buan, in the province of North Jeolla.

DP World Selects TYCROP and Loop Energy to provide a hydrogen electric solution for the gantry crane at the Port of Vancouver

TYCROP,  industrial manufacturing and engineering company based in Chilliwack BC, and Loop Energy™, a hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer, announced being selected to provide a hydrogen electric solution for the global supply chain leader DP World pilot project to decarbonize its rubber-tired gantry fleet at the Port of Vancouver.

DP World’s rubber-tired gantry crane will be fitted with a TYCROP-designed dual fuel system powered by two of Loop Energy’s T505 fuel cell systems. The pilot project will see DP World’s first RTG powered by hydrogen fuel cell systems put into operation at the Port of Vancouver.  The RTG pilot is expected to begin operation in Q2 2024, and will be used as a demonstrator to scale the electrification across the organization’s global fleet in subsequent phases.

Chevron acquires majority stake in the energy storage hydrogen project in Utah

 Chevron U.S.A. Inc., through its Chevron New Energies division, announced on 12 September it has closed a transaction with Haddington Ventures to acquire 100% of Magnum Development, LLC and thus a majority interest in ACES Delta, LLC , which is a joint venture between Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. and Magnum Development. ACES Delta is developing the Advanced Clean Energy Storage project in Delta, Utah.

The Advanced Clean Energy Storage project plans to use electrolysis to convert renewable energy into hydrogen and will utilize solution-mined salt caverns for seasonal, dispatchable storage of the energy. The first project, designed to convert and store up to 100 metric tons per day of hydrogen, is under construction and is expected to enter commercial-scale operations in mid-2025 to support the Intermountain Power Project’s “IPP Renewed” initiative. 

Several other opportunities for the project to produce and supply hydrogen to customers in the utility, transportation and industrial sectors in the western region of the United States are in development.

Venice ordered 90 hydrogen Solaris buses

The transport company Azienda Veneziana della Mobilita has ordered a total of 90 hydrogen Solaris buses, with 75 of them being the 12-meter version and 15 being articulated buses, the Solaris announced on 12 September. The contract also includes an option to increase the order quantity.

AVM has  placed an order for 75 units of the 12-meter Urbino hydrogen and 15 articulated Urbino 18 hydrogen buses by Solaris. According to the agreement, these vehicles will be delivered to Venice gradually, starting from November 2025, and the deliveries will be completed in the first weeks of 2026.

It’s worth noting that 30 battery-powered Solaris Urbino 12 electric buses and 4 hydrogen-powered Urbino 12 are already running in and around Venice.

Electric Hydrogen to Supply Electrolyzer Technology for one of North America’s Largest Green Hydrogen Facilities

Electric Hydrogen Co., a manufacturer of advanced, industrial-scale hydrogen electrolyzer technology, and New Fortress Energy Inc. announced on 12 September that they have entered into a definitive agreement for supply of EH2’s flagship 100 megawatt (MW) electrolyzer system to NFE’s green hydrogen project in Texas. 

Expected to be one of the largest in North America, the facility will be enabled by EH2’s ground-breaking advanced electrolysis technology, capable of producing nearly 50 tons per day of green hydrogen. First hydrogen production is expected in the fourth quarter of 2024 with full commercial operation in 2025. The site and facility are scalable to 200 MWs in the future.

VDL Groep reveals fuel cell truck for Toyota’s European logistics

First hydrogen truck by VDL Groep using Toyota fuel cell modules is ready for pilot phase, the Toyota  announced on 12 September. 

VDL Groep to launch four more hydrogen trucks to be tested by Toyota’s Logistic Providers.Route trials are to start in 2023 and last for 5 years.

This first demo truck will be used to perform road testing and evaluation of improvements towards the next steps of the project. VDL Groep is preparing four more fuel cell trucks, which will be used by Toyota’s logistic providers VOS Transport Group, CEVA, Groupe CAT and Yusen. These transportation companies will greatly contribute to the project by using the hydrogen trucks on their daily logistics routes passing by Belgium (Antwerp), France (Lille), Germany (Cologne), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam). The four routes have at least one hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) each, including back-up solutions.

Honeywell will collaborate with NREL to scale hydrogen fuel storage solutions for Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles

Honeywell announced  that it has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on a year-long collaboration to prototype and support the commercialization of a cartridge-based hydrogen fuel storage solution for Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Honeywell will provide technological expertise, testing for fuel cartridge technology, supply chain support, prototyping and fuel cell evaluation to qualify for the “Fuel Additives for Solid Hydrogen (FLASH) Carriers in Electric Aviation” project.

The FLASH project will mature a new hydrogen carrier technology developed at NREL as part of the HyMARC (Hydrogen Materials Advanced Research Consortium) project. The program is funded by a partnership of the DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, NREL, and Honeywell.

Electric UAVs are seeing rapid adoption in industrial applications such as surveying, infrastructure inspection and security. Many of these applications previously required inefficient ground-based vehicles or hazardous use of piloted helicopters.

Danone to Develop Resilient Microgrid in South Africa Anchored by Hydrogen Ready CHP Unit

Moshesh Partners has selected Clarke Energy to supply a gas fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) unit and microgrid controller for a Danone SA dairy food manufacturing plant in Boksburg, the Clarke Energy announced.

Clarke Energy will supply a 5 MW combined heat and power solution, that comprises of two of INNIO Group’s J616 Jenbacher containerised engines, a waste heat boiler and 75,000l thermal store that will feed the existing hot water distribution system.

The hydrogen ready CHP solution can be converted to H2 operation as soon as sufficient supply is available.

German retailer REWE began using a hydrogen truck

REWE starts with hydrogen trucks from its startup Hylane in the northern region of the Germany, the company announced.

Thanks to the seven storage containers integrated into the vehicle, the Hyundai “XCIENT Fuel Cell” vehicle can have a range of around 400 kilometers. Depending on the temperature, the truck can be fully recharged within eight to 20 minutes. Schmitz Cargobull has equipped the vehicle with a special body with cooling and tail lift to meet the daily demands on the road. To ensure a permanent supply of hydrogen for the vehicle, Hylane works closely with H2 MOBILITY, which operates hydrogen filling stations nationwide.

A California company plans to convert a West Virginia coal plant into a hydrogen burning power station

Gov. Jim Justice announced that Omnis Fuel Technologies will invest $800 million in the Pleasants Power Plant and create an estimated 600 jobs. Omnis Fuel specializes in developing, licensing, and commercializing innovative technologies to aid sustainable energy production.

The coal-fired plant restarted the production of electricity in the end of August, saving more than 160 West Virginia jobs. 

“Coal is such an important part of our economy and our state’s history, and Omnis will use coal to produce hydrogen, graphite, and water vapor. They are going to more than double the amount of coal they need to operate the plant annually,” Gov. Justice said.

Located south of St. Marys in Pleasants County, the plant currently employs approximately 160 workers. When their expansion is complete, the plant will need upwards of 600 employees to operate. 

The 1.2 gigawatt coal-fired plant will be retrofitted to generate electricity with hydrogen. The goal is to produce power with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

“Omnis worked diligently with state and community leaders to maintain every job and ensure no employee lost even one hour of payroll during the recovery and restart of the power plant plant,” Michelle Christian, Vice President of Omnis Fuel, said. “This is a historic moment, and we are proud to be a part of helping West Virginia maintain critical power capability in the state and preserve 1.2 gigawatts of power generating capacity, enough electricity to sustain one million homes.”

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has awarded an approval in principle to Nedstack fuel cell technology for its PEMGEN®600 containerised fue cell system, the BV announced. 

The AiP awarded by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore to the PemGen®600 is a key milestone in Nedstack’s mission to provide clean, efficient energy solutions for the maritime industry. It confirms that the system design fully complies with BV’s NR467 Classification Rules for fuel cell power systems on board ships. 

Dutch fuel cell specialist Nedstack has leveraged its expertise in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells to help drive the adoption of hydrogen technology worldwide.

HDF Energy  launched the HYNAVAL to design hydrogen-powered boats and retrofit existing boats to hydrogen propulsion

Hydrogène de France (HDF Energy), leading developer of large-scale green hydrogen infrastructure and high-power fuel cell manufacturer, is taking a significant stake alongside CLYD, a naval architect, in the new company HYNAVAL. The two companies are combining their expertise to design hydrogen-powered boats and retrofit existing boats to hydrogen propulsion.

HYNAVAL, located within the Bordeaux port area, will have a dedicated facility for its activities. On this site, HYNAVAL will operate a shipyard specializing in the design, manufacture, and retrofit of hydrogen-powered boats, providing an emissions-free alternative. This collaboration will merge CLYD’s naval architecture expertise with HDF Energy’s mastery in the hydrogen domain. CLYD and OCEA Construction Navale have won Bordeaux Métropole’s tender to build the city’s future public river shuttles, the Batcub. ZEVI funding for hydrogen USV & refilling station on the Thames

SEA-KIT International has won funding from the Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) competition to design and manufacture a hydrogen-fuelled Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV)., the SEA-KIT  announced on 11 September. The company will partner with maritime decarbonisation disruptor, Marine2o, for the build of land-based infrastructure to produce green hydrogen, via renewable energy and the electrolysis of water, as part of the project. The Port of London Authority (PLA), a consortium partner, will host the hydrogen refilling station on the River Thames in London and subsequently operate the ZEPHR USV.

Solaris to carry out the biggest order for hydrogen buses in Europe -130 vehicles 

The municipal public transport operator TPER in the city of Bologna is going to purchase as much as 130 hydrogen buses, the Solaris announced on 11 September.

These zero-emission vehicles will be supplied by Solaris. The delivery will encompass 127 units of 12-metre Urbino 12 hydrogen buses for TPER Bologna and 3 units for TPER Ferrara. The carrier shall also have the right to extend the order by an additional 140 vehicles as an option.

Each bus will feature an innovative hydrogen system that fulfils the highest safety standards. The 70 kW fuel cell will derive hydrogen from five composite tanks placed on the bus roof. With the full tanks that can hold 37.5 kg of hydrogen, the bus will be able to cover about 350 km.

Toyota to supply its fuel cells for hydrogen trucks based on the Mercedes Benz Atego

Toyota Tsusho Nexty Electronics Europe GmbH has signed a comprehensive supplier contract for Toyota fuel cells with pepper motion GmbH.

The Toyota fuel cell is the basis of the hydrogen version of the pepper kit and is now being used for an initial 25 hydrogen trucks based on the Mercedes Benz Atego. These are currently being put into operation by Paul Nutzfahrzeuge.

In concluding the contract, Mr. Kakihara, President of Nexty Electronics Corporation, explained, “We are delighted to co-work with pepper motion as a highly qualified expert in the development of innovative electric drive systems in the commercial vehicle sector above 7.5 t.”

Vale and H2 Green Steel  to study the development of hubs for hydrogen production 

Brazilian miner Vale said  it has signed an agreement with Sweden H2 Green Steel (H2GS) to study the joint development of industrial hubs in Brazil and North America

Brazilian miner Vale Vale and H2 Green Steel have signed an agreement to jointly study the feasibility of developing green industrial hubs in Brazil and North America, enabling sustainable steel production. In such industrial centers, H2 Green Steel is exploring to produce low-carbon steel value chain products, such as green hydrogen and hot briquetted iron (HBI), using iron ore briquettes produced by Vale as input material and renewable electricity as the energy source for its hydrogen production.

Avaada GreenH2  to set up a 0.5 MTPA green hydrogen/ammonia production facility 

The Indian AVAADA Group announced its initiative to establish a cutting-edge green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing unit at Gopalpur Industrial Park, Odisha. This significant move comes in the wake of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked with Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited (TSSEZL).

Under the definitive agreement, Avaada Group will acquire 120 acres of land in TSSEZL’s Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP), to set up a 0.5 MTPA green hydrogen/ammonia production facility.

JCB installed hydrogen engine into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van

British manufacturer of agricultural machinery JCB has made a second major breakthrough in proving the wider appeal of hydrogen combustion technology by installing one of its super-efficient hydrogen engines into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, the company announced.

The white van retrofit was completed in just two weeks and one of the vehicle’s first test drivers was JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who is leading the company’s £100 million hydrogen engine project.The internal combustion engine used in the van is the same as those already powering prototype JCB construction and agricultural machines. It is the second Mercedes-Benz vehicle to be retrofitted with a JCB hydrogen engine; earlier this year a 7.5 tonne Mercedes-Benz truck was given the JCB hydrogen treatment. 

JCB has already manufactured more than 70 hydrogen internal combustion engines in a project involving 150 British engineers and they now power prototype JCB backhoe loader and Loadall telescopic handler machines.

FirstElement Fuel and MHI Complete the Reliability Testing of Liquid Hydrogen Pump 

FirstElement Fuel Inc. (FEF) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Ltd (MHI), have successfully reached 250 hours of operation on the long-term durability test of MHI’s 90 MPa Class Liquid Hydrogen Pump (LH2 Pump), the MHI announced.

The test involved 300 run cycles of the pump resulting in 30 tons of liquid hydrogen transfer. This is the equivalent of fueling 1,100 fuel cell buses. The hydrogen transferred was used to refuel hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in California resulting in zero emissions transportation. Inspection of the pump revealed that all internal pump components are still in excellent condition, confirming the robustness and longevity of the pump. This test began in April 2023 at FEF’s Hydrogen Distribution Hub in Livermore, CA and will continue into next year.

The MHI LH2 Pump has consistently and reliably achieved an excellent output of 160 kilograms/hour at a discharge pressure of 90 megapascals.
