Polish ORLEN purchased a modern locomotive from PESA, which is the first railway vehicle in Poland using hydrogen drive. As part of operational tests, on September 17, the first run of a hydrogen locomotive with a passenger carriage took place on the route Gdynia – Hel. This is another investment that is part of the ORLEN Group’s hydrogen strategy, which involves the use of hydrogen in rail and public transport. By 2030, the company will allocate PLN 7.4 billion to invest in hydrogen technologies based on renewable energy sources and technologies for converting household waste into hydrogen.
The agreement concluded between ORLEN and PESA Bydgoszcz also includes a 4-year service package, which will include, among other things: standard checks and possible repairs. The locomotive’s tank capacity is more than five times that of hydrogen buses, at 175 kg. This allows the locomotive to operate around the clock. The locomotive’s traction system includes two fuel cells with a power of 85 kW each, a battery and four traction motors.
