France announces Eur700 mil for hydrogen production funding in 2024

The French energy ministry has allocated Eur700 million ($737 million) for a support mechanism for hydrogen production in 2024, S&P Global reported.

The funding allocation is part of a Eur10 billion package for ecological planning announced late Sept. 27, including Eur1.5 billion for nuclear in 2024.

France is planning a call for 150 MW of electrolysis for hydrogen production in 2024, followed by 250 MW in 2025 and 600 MW in 2026, according to a consultation document published earlier in September.

France is aiming for 6.5 GW of installed electrolyzer capacity by 2030, while the EU is targeting 10 million mt/year of green hydrogen production by that date, requiring over 80 GW of electrolysis.

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, assessed the cost of producing renewable hydrogen via alkaline electrolysis in Europe at Eur6.27/kg ($6.61/kg) Sept. 27 (Netherlands, including capex), based on month-ahead power prices. Proton exchange membrane electrolysis production was assessed at Eur7.37/kg.

Easyjet wants to improve airport infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen aircraft

The head of the British airline Easyjet, Johan Lundgren, said in an interview with Neue Zürcher Zeitung that he wants to improve airport infrastructure for hydrogen aircraft.

Technological development is currently moving much faster than the preparation of infrastructure and production, Lundgren said in an interview published on September 26. “These things need to be adjusted before the first hydrogen plane takes off.”

Hydrogen requires four times more space on board than kerosene, which is currently stored in the wings. “But it seems clear to me that we should rely on the hydrogen industry because it has many possible applications beyond flight,” he said.

Lundgren believes it is the airline’s responsibility to start discussing this issue. According to him, Easyjet is investing its resources in aircraft powered by hydrogen.

DHL, Sasol, HH2E to set up a joint initiative to build production capacities for SAFs based on green hydrogen

The companies have signed an agreement to set up a joint initiative to build potential production capacities for SAFs based on green hydrogen, or eSAFs, somewhere in eastern Germany, HH2E said in a statement.

They plan production of at least 200,000 tonnes per year, with the potential to scale up to 500,000 tonnes per year, it added.

Aircraft manufacturer Airbus (AIR.PA) also intends to join the consortium to use the jet fuel, according to the statement.

HH2E is emerging as a trailblazer in Germany’s green energy sector. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies, the company can transform intermittent inputs from renewable energy—especially excess power from solar and wind sources—into a consistent green hydrogen output. This hydrogen can subsequently be employed as a raw material for eSAF production. By 2030, HH2E intends to establish a green hydrogen production capacity of 4 GW in Germany, representing a multi-billion-euro investment. HH2E has already announced plans for two major facilities: one in Lubmin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and the other in Thierbach, close to Leipzig, Saxony. Additionally, the company has identified 15 prime locations across Germany for green hydrogen production, with a notable focus on the eastern region.

Rolls-Royce has proven a critical hydrogen engine technology

Working with Loughborough University in the UK and the German Aerospace Centre Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt (DLR), Rolls-Royce has proven a critical engine technology that marks another significant step in the journey to enabling hydrogen as an aviation fuel, the company said.

Tests on a full annular combustor of a Pearl 700 engine at DLR in Cologne running on 100% hydrogen have proven the fuel can be combusted at conditions that represent maximum take-off thrust.

Key to that achievement has been the successful design of advanced fuel spray nozzles to control the combustion process. This involved overcoming significant engineering challenges as hydrogen burns far hotter and more rapidly than kerosene. The new nozzles were able to control the flame position using a new system that progressively mixes air with the hydrogen to manage the fuel’s reactivity. Rolls-Royce is pleased to confirm that combustor operability and emissions were both in line with expectations.

The individual nozzles were initially tested at intermediate pressure at Loughborough’s recently upgraded test facilities and at DLRCologne before the final full-pressure combustor tests took place at DLR Cologne.
