Norwegian Statkraft can build pilot plant to produce hydrogen from renewable energies in East Frisia by 2026
The Norwegian energy company Statkraft is pushing ahead with its plans for a pilot plant to produce hydrogen from renewable energies in East Frisia, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported.
The company aims to install an electrolyzer at its existing power plant location in Emden by 2026. The authorities expect approval for the project by the beginning of 2024, said Helge-Jürgen Beil, head of Statkraft’s hydrogen division in Germany. The ordering of the necessary components and initial construction work could then begin next year.
With an output of ten megawatts, the pilot plant will produce 200 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. According to the company, the customer will be local heavy-duty transport, such as buses or trucks. With this amount, around 100 trucks could be operated emission-free via hydrogen filling stations in the region every year.
The plans had already become known in March of this year, when Statkraft submitted the approval documents for the electrolyzer.

Florida Power & Light Company begans to produce green hydrogen at Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub
Florida Power & Light Company announced that the first-of-its-kind clean hydrogen pilot project in Florida reached a significant construction milestone this month – the production of hydrogen.
FPL’s Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub will help the company explore using clean hydrogen to offset the use of natural gas to run a traditional power plant. Built with state-of-the-art technology, the hydrogen hub pilot project draws from Florida’s most abundant natural resources – water and solar – to produce clean hydrogen.
As the FPL Cavendish Solar Energy Center operates, a portion of solar energy will flow directly to the grid to serve customers, while the rest will go to power hydrogen production equipment, including a series of electrolyzers.
For this project, a 5% blend of hydrogen will be tested in one of three natural gas combustion turbines. The FPL Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub will help the company maximize learning opportunities as it continues to pursue its Real Zero goal of decarbonizing its power-generation by 2045 at the latest.
Construction of the facility is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

The Dutch government to give €250 million to several small hydrogen projects for maximum learning effect
The amount of almost €250 million should provide 100 megawatts of electrolysis capacity. The government hopes to use this money to help realize 5 to 10 smaller projects throughout the country, so that several companies and local authorities can gain experience with electrolysis.
To ensure that more and more renewable hydrogen is produced in the Netherlands, the government wants as many parties as possible to gain experience with electrolysis (the process for making renewable hydrogen). To achieve this, the government wants several projects to be able to use the available budget; therefore, only projects up to 50 megawatts are eligible. In this way, knowledge is widely distributed and lessons regarding, among other things, technology and licensing procedures can accelerate the development of subsequent projects.

Biden Will Award $7 Billion for Hydrogen Hubs Across the US
President Joe Biden is set this week to announce as much as $7 billion in funding for hydrogen projects across the country as part of a competition to jump-start production of the clean-burning fuel in the US, according to people familiar with the matter.
The funding for so-called hydrogen hubs, where the gas can both be produced and used, is intended to highlight its potential as carbon-free fuel to run factories and power plants. The amount of hydrogen produced in the US could surge to 10 million metric tons by 2030, according to a report released earlier this year by the Energy Department.
Biden is scheduled on Friday to visit Pennsylvania, which is leading an Appalachian hydrogen hub that proposes to use natural gas and carbon capture, where he will give remarks on the clean-energy transition, according to the White House. The project, in partnership with West Virginia and Ohio, also includes Shell Plc.
The awards mark the culmination of a furious race between states for the funding, which was included in 2021’s bipartisan infrastructure legislation. The Energy Department in January urged 33 projects to submit full applications, after receiving 79 proposals. Between six and 10 are expected to receive final awards.

Plan approval for the construction of GET H2 Nucleus hydrogen pipeline has been submitted
Another important milestone has been reached for the GET H2 Nukleus hydrogen project. The Clausthal-Zellerfeld State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology has now issued the planning approval decision for the construction of the hydrogen pipeline in Lingen-Hanekenfähr, the Nowega announced. With the 2.3 km long line, the transmission system operator Nowega wants to connect the 300 MW electrolysis plant, which the energy company RWE wants to build gradually in Lingen, to the planned hydrogen network. The green hydrogen produced via electrolysis can be transported to industrial customers in the Ruhr area. The line is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025.
“The planning approval decision for the line in Lingen is an important building block in the overall GET H2 Nukleus project. Linking the production, import, storage and use of hydrogen via a high-performance infrastructure is the core of the hydrogen economy,” says Frank Heunemann, Managing Director of Nowega GmbH. The construction site in Lingen-Hanekenfähr has already been set up and the 180 steel pipes required for the line have arrived on site. “The documents were checked very quickly and professionally,” emphasizes Dennis Hoeveler, Head of Technology at Nowega. “This helps us stay on schedule with the project.”
