Toyota and JAF unveiled hydrogen road service vehicle
The Motegi Super Taikyu 5 Hours Race, Round 5 of the 2023 ENEOS Super Taikyu Series Supported by Bridgestone, was held in Tochigi Prefecture, the Toyota Times reported on 20 October.
Motegi was also the venue for the unveiling of a hydrogen road service vehicle jointly developed by Toyota and the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF). Though still a prototype, this FC truck is equipped with hydrogen modules that enable it to directly refuel other vehicles.
As part of its roadside services, JAF annually assists some 50,000 vehicles stranded without fuel, including 700 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) that have run out of charge and around 20 cars needing a hydrogen top-up.
The newly premiered road service vehicle was jointly developed to ensure that, in a hydrogen society with more FCEVs on the road, running out of hydrogen could be handled like other fuels rather than requiring cars to be towed.

MODULAR VEHICLE PLATFORM UNVEILED FOR THE HVS HYDROGEN-POWERED HGV
UK-based Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) has unveiled a modular platform. Our innovative modular platform offers HGV operators maximum flexibility from a single base vehicle, the company said.
«Our innovative tractor unit will be available with two different types of e-axle – one medium power and one high power – and with up to three hydrogen tanks, depending on the customer’s range requirements. In addition, the hydrogen fuel cell powertrain can be specified with two different power outputs depending on the customer’s payload and mission requirements. The modular platform is built on a fixed wheelbase, which means the vehicle’s footprint does not change, irrespective of specification.
«Our ground-up designed vehicles have been specifically developed to maximise driver comfort while the platform is purpose built around the hydrogen powertrain. The vehicle’s design includes a suspended cab at the front and a fixed tower at the rear, housing the thermal and powertrain systems», the HVS stated.
This platform format breaks with the industry-standard tradition of variable cab types and sizes – such as big, medium and small, and high/low-roof – and means that even the smallest variants have the same spacious a cab as the largest models.

US hydrogen tax credits touch off sparring letters from Senate Democrats
WASHINGTON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – Ten Senate Democrats will ask President Joe Biden’s administration not to include strict rules guiding use of clean hydrogen tax credits that the Treasury Department is due to release by the end of the year, according to a draft of a letter seen by Reuters on Wednesday.
The letter, which the senators planned to send to White House adviser John Podesta, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, will urge the officials to make the Treasury guidance flexible. It seeks to allow projects fueled by existing energy sources including, gas, hydroelectricity and nuclear to be eligible for the tax credits.
The group is led by Washington Senator Maria Cantwell, whose state was one of 16 to win part of $7 billion in federal funding to build out regional hydrogen hubs. The letter warns that an approach favored by other Democratic lawmakers and environmental groups creating “overly complex eligibility criteria” would hamper the hubs and the growth of the nascent industry.

DENSO will build a huge swing to produce energy and convert into hydrogen, using DENSO’s SOEC system
DENSO corporation announced that it will exhibit at JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW 2023, held at Tokyo Big Sight, from Saturday, October 28 to Sunday, November 5.
DENSO will build a huge swing set in the shape of “H2” to convey an image of hydrogen energy to visitors. Electricity produced from energy generated by fully swinging on the swing will be converted into hydrogen, which can be stored for later use, by using DENSO’s solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) system.
A SOEC is a unit that operates at high temperatures using a ceramic membrane as an electrolyte to electrolyze water vapor to produce hydrogen. There are other methods of producing hydrogen, such as alkaline water electrolysis in which an alkaline aqueous solution is used as an electrolyte, as well as proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis in which a polymer membrane is used as an electrolyte. The SOECs used in this demonstration require less electric energy for electrolysis than the other two types. In the verification test jointly conducted by DENSO Fukushima Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation since March of this year, PEM water electrolysis units have been used.

Composite cryogenic tanks tested with liquid hydrogen by UK National Composites Centre
The National Composites Centre has announced that it has successfully tested a range of composite cryogenic storage tanks with liquid hydrogen that it has designed and manufactured.
Two tanks were tested using liquid hydrogen; one of a single piece construction and one of a split piece design, to assess viability for the design and manufacture of large tanks. The tanks were 30 litres in capacity, designed for a pressure of 8 bar, and manufactured using automated fibre placement on-site at the National Composites Centre. The tanks comprised only a single skin to contain the liquid hydrogen, and were mounted within a vacuum chamber at FSE’s test facility to provide insulation.
The one-piece tank was subject to 10 thermal cycles of being emptied and re-filled with liquid hydrogen, up to a pressure of 1 bar, followed by a single pressure cycle up to 7 bar. The two-piece tank underwent 10 pressure cycles from 0 to 7 bar at LH2 (-253°C) temperature. The results have enabled model validation, with further cycling scheduled at FSE to test alternative end boss designs using the same composite tank.
Marcus Walls-Bruck, Head of Hydrogen Technologies at the NCC said: “Our results and novel methods developed will enable rapid advancement within the UK, building fundamental understanding of the challenges in designing and manufacturing cryogenic tanks. This is a significant step forward in the UK goal to develop capability in designing and manufacturing hydrogen powered aircraft of the future.”
