P2X Solutions and Danisco Sweeteners signed a contract on the delivery of green hydrogen

P2X Solutions Ltd. and Danisco Sweeteners Ltd., a subsidiary of International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF), have signed a contract according to which Danisco Sweeteners’ Kotka factory will produce xylitol in the future using green hydrogen supplied by P2X Solutions. The production of xylitol always requires, among other things, xylose and hydrogen.

“Our cooperation with Danisco excellently demonstrates the role of green hydrogen in the industrial transition towards cleaner production. Green hydrogen can advance the abandonment of fossil energy in a wide range of industrial sectors. We are excited to be making xylitol, a major Finnish innovation, even more sustainable,” says Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions.

The xylitol manufactured at Danisco’s Kotka factory goes by the brand name XIVIA, whose lower carbon footprint differentiates the Kotka-based xylitol from other xylitol products available in the market.

“For IFF, sustainability is a core value, and at the Kotka factory, we wish to cooperate with operators that share this value. It is important for our factory that the energy and raw materials used in our process comply with the principles of sustainable development. P2X Solutions is a pioneer of green hydrogen, and with this partnership, the xylitol produced by the Kotka factory will become an even more sustainable product,” states Mari Kainiemi, CEO of Danisco Sweeteners Ltd.

From 2024 onwards, P2X Solutions’ Harjavalta plant will produce green hydrogen using renewable energy. The production process will not generate climate emissions unlike traditional hydrogen production that utilizes, for example, natural gas.
