Air Products to Build Europe’s Largest Blue Hydrogen Plantin #Rotterdam
Air Products announced it will build, own and operate a state-of-the-art carbon capture and carbon dioxide (CO2) treatment facility at its existing hydrogen production plant in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The facility is expected to be on-stream in 2026, and the resulting “blue” hydrogen product to serve ExxonMobil’s (Esso) Rotterdam refinery and additional customers via Air Products’ hydrogen pipeline network system. This will be the largest blue hydrogen plant in Europe once operational.
The carbon capture retrofit will capture CO2 from Air Products’ existing hydrogen plant and ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam refinery. The plant will be connected to the Porthos system, a consortium developing the first large-scale CO2 transport and storage system in the Netherlands which recently reached final investment decision approval. Along with CO2 from other industry in the port of Rotterdam, the captured CO2 will be transported to depleted gas fields in the North Sea, approximately 20 kilometers off the coast, where it will be permanently stored at a depth of more than three kilometers beneath the seabed.
Porthos allows Air Products to more than halve its CO2 emissions in the port of Rotterdam. This represents a substantial step for reducing Air Products’ direct emissions in the short term and contributes to meeting the Dutch National Climate Agreement targets. At the same time, Air Products is working hard to further decarbonise its own activities and those of its customers by realising plans to make green hydrogen available from imported renewable energy in the port of Rotterdam.
The project is being undertaken as part of long-term agreements with ExxonMobil and the Dutch State. Blue hydrogen from Air Products’ hydrogen production plant will help customers in industry and mobility transition, whilst also creating and retaining jobs in an important industrial area.

Rolls-Royce SMR, ULC-Energy and Topsoe Cooperate on Nuclear Hydrogen Production
Nuclear energy combined with SOEC technology has the potential to produce clean hydrogen more cheaply than alternative electrolysis processes because:
• The electrolysis takes place at a high temperature, which means that less electricity is needed to produce hydrogen.
• The nuclear power plants can produce energy on average up to 95% of the time, significantly higher than alternative variable energy sources.
• Nuclear energy can supply heat as well as electricity. By using heat directly, energy losses in the steam turbine can be avoided thus increasing the effective energy capacity of the nuclear power plant above its electric power rating.
Furthermore, the Rolls-Royce SMR nuclear power plant can, when required, switch to deliver power to the grid, providing back-up to variable power sources when these sources are not available. This is expected to be a competitive solution compared to alternatives, like long duration energy storage solutions or hydrogen combustion for electricity generation. The joint investigation will include a valuation of the operational flexibility of the Rolls-Royce SMR/Topsoe SOEC combination in the future green energy market.

HHI to supply engine for the world first Ammonia fueled vessel in the first half of 2025
Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division to deliver a sizable ammonia dual-fuel engine in the first half of 2025, the company announced. This engine will be installed in the world’s inaugural ammonia-powered vessel, which will constructed by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
The world’s inaugural engine designed for commercial operation is the 6X52DF-A model. It was developed in collaboration with Switzerland’s WinGD during the Greek “Posidonia 2022” event held last year. Since then, extensive discussions and cooperation have taken place to ensure the engine’s optimal performance and safety. This collaborative effort involved shipowners, shipyards, and vessel operators, all with the objective of minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To achieve this goal, the engine incorporates combustion optimization technology and exhaust gas post-processing technology, addressing challenges such as nitrogen oxide emission regulations and ammonia slip.
This marks the initial phase of the ammonia fuel engine market, which is gaining significant attention as an eco-friendly, carbon-free fuel for the future. HD HHI-EMD anticipates a gradual expansion of this market to encompass other vessel categories, such as tankers and bulk carriers.
Furthermore, HD HHI-EMD has set its sights on developing its proprietary 4-stroke HiMSEN Engine’s ammonia dual-fuel engine in the latter half of the coming year. The aim is to take a leading role in the maritime industry’s journey towards carbon neutrality and offer a diverse range of solutions to its customers.
