Contrail-chasing Blue Condor makes Airbus’ first full hydrogen-powered flight
The modified glider at the centre of Airbus UpNext’s hydrogen contrail-studying experiment, Blue Condor, made its first hydrogen-powered flight over Nevada in the United States on 8 November, the AirBus said. The flight was the company’s first ever to use hydrogen as the sole fuel source, and it kicked off a test campaign that will conclude in a contrail-measuring mission in early 2024.
Hydrogen offers aviation a path to low-carbon operations, yet its combustion produces contrails just like conventional jet fuel. Hydrogen contrails, however, differ significantly. They don’t contain soot or sulphur oxides, but do hold nitrous oxides and a lot of water vapour: up to 2.5 times more than kerosene contrails. Both are considered climate-impacting emissions, and as such the aviation industry has a duty to address them.
Therefore, as part of the ZEROe project, Airbus is committed to studying the composition of these little-understood hydrogen contrails. Using a modified Arcus-J glider, Airbus UpNext’s Blue Condor project will take a small hydrogen-combustion engine as high as 30,000 feet and compare its emissions to a similar-sized kerosene engine, flying alongside onboard a second aircraft. Both gliders are operated by The Perlan Project and the hydrogen engine was assembled by German company Aero Design Works.

Habeck: Hydrogen core network to comprise 9700 kilometers
Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck is planning 9700 kilometers of pipelines for the most important connections of a future German hydrogen network.
According to Habeck, the network will initially be planned oversized, with an output capacity of 270 terawatt hours. For the year 2030, a demand of 95 to 130 terawatt hours is currently expected. “That means we are planning for the future.”
In the long term, he assumes that Germany will produce 30 to 50 percent of its hydrogen requirements itself, with the rest having to be imported. This would be done via pipelines or in the form of ammonia by ship. Habeck emphasized that this would make Germany less dependent on imports than is currently the case with oil, gas and hard coal, where almost 100 percent is imported.
Thomas Goßmann, CEO of FNB Gas, put the investment costs for the core network at 19.8 billion euros. This sum is to be provided by the private sector. FNB Gas is the association of supra-regional gas transport companies in Germany./hrz/DP/mis

Metacon received approved CE marking of HHG 50 for the production of green hydrogen from biogas
Metacon, through its subsidiary Helbio, has received approved CE marking of its hydrogen generator HHG 50 for the production of ca 50 Nm3 of hydrogen per hour, the company said. The CE mark is an important step in the development of our core technology for our compact reformers. This type of unit is intended for Metacon’s demonstration plant in Kempten in southern Germany, where preparations for the upcoming installation are ongoing.
The CE mark proves and ensures that our technology and design comply with EU product safety requirements. This means that with the application of the corresponding design and execution, we will be able to obtain corresponding certifications for our other product families that are under development.
The fact that our products comply with the EU’s standards and regulations for product safety is a prerequisite for being able to put the products on the market and allows us to sell them throughout the EU. The CE marking means that we have received a Certificate of Conformity for the fuel processor from an EU-accredited certification body, in this case, EuroCert, according to the applicable EU directives and standards for the parts that require special notification.

Viasea plans to build hydrogen-powered container ships
Enova, Norwegian government enterprise, is providing substantial support of a total of 171.8 million Norwegian kroner to Viasea Shipping for the acquisition of two hydrogen-powered container ships, the company said.. Once completed, these ships will be deployed in Viasea’s existing routes between Norway and the Northern Europe.
Viasea aims to take the lead and inspire the maritime industry to invest in emission-free vessels. This vessel concept is designed for exceptionally lower energy consumption, combining new, emission-free technologies such as green hydrogen and rotor sails for the direct utilization of nature’s own renewable energy.
Hydrogen refuelling is initially planned in Norway. As hydrogen becomes available elsewhere along the planned route, the ships will be able to operate entirely without diesel. At the startup the combination of hydrogen and diesel operation will result in over a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to an equivalent diesel-powered vessel. With 100% hydrogen operation, the ship will be emission-free.
