Lhyfe’s world’s first offshore hydrogen production pilot platform is returning to port

Lhyfe, one of the world’s pioneers in green and renewable hydrogen production, announces that its offshore hydrogen production pilot, known as Sealhyfe, will return to the Quai des Frégates in Saint-Nazaire.

In launching, on September 23, 2022, the world’s first offshore hydrogen production pilot, Lhyfe wanted to prove the technical feasibility of such a project and acquire the operational experience needed to quickly scale up.

The company therefore voluntarily chose to confront Sealhyfe under real offshore conditions during several months. It has thus been tested on a floating platform, which has been re-engineered to stabilise the production unit at sea (the WAVEGEM platform, engineered by GEPS Techno), and connected to Central Nantes’ SEM-REV offshore testing hub operated by the OPEN-C Foundation, which was already linked with a floating wind turbine (FLOATGEN, engineered and operated by BW Ideol).

For this, Lhyfe and its partners designed, built and assembled all of the technology necessary for producing hydrogen offshore, including the 1 MW electrolyser supplied by Plug. The Sealhyfe platform is capable of producing up to 400 kilograms of hydrogen a day.

SWITCH Maritime Secures $10M to Expand Hydrogen and Electric Ferry Fleet in US

SWITCH Maritime LLC, a US-based company developing electrified, zero-emission ferries powered by battery and hydrogen fuel cell, has raised $10 million in a Series A round led by Nexus Development Capital to grow its fleet, the company announced.

SWITCH’s recent fundraise comes on the back of the completion of its flagship zero-emission vessel, Sea Change, which will operate as part of the public Water Emergency Transportation Authority’s (WETA) SF Bay Ferry fleet. The new 75-passenger ferry uses hydrogen fuel cells to produce electricity to power electric motors for distances up to 300 nautical miles, and speeds up to 15 knots, with the added benefits of no exhaust smoke and very little vibration and noise. While the only emission is pure water vapor, this technology allows for new ferries to have the same performance capabilities as diesel-powered vessels, and without the need for installing large-scale battery charging infrastructure on the shore.

Hitachi Energy unveils new emission-free alternative to diesel-powered generators

Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, unveiled today the HyFlex demonstration unit, its Hydrogen Power Generator in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This innovative solution is an integrated and scalable plug-and-play generator for temporary or permanent installation, where power grid connections are impractical, and diesel generators are not an option. The medium-power variant provides power for temporary installations and is designed for 400-600 kVA. The high-power variant caters to permanent installations and will provide 1 MVA or more per unit and can be installed in parallel to meet the customer’s specific power needs.

HyFlex is completely emission-free, producing only AC power, usable heat, and water. In comparison, a 1 MVA diesel generator running at full load combusts roughly 225 kg of diesel and emits 720 kg of CO2 emissions per hour.

Aschaffenburg municipal utility company launched a pilot project with waste disposal vehicle run on hydrogen

“Clean, quiet, efficient” is the slogan on Aschaffenburg’s first hydrogen waste vehicle. The vehicle was officially handed over by the manufacturer on Thursday, 16 November at the municipal utility company’s waste disposal plant. “This really is a pilot project in the Bavarian Lower Main region and we are all excited to see how the vehicle will prove itself in use,” says Stefan Maunz, Plant Manager at Stadtwerke.

The use of the vehicle for waste disposal is another milestone towards emission-free transport. The vehicle runs fully electrically on electricity that is continuously generated in the fuel cells from the refuelled hydrogen. A particular advantage for citizens and refuse collectors is that the vehicle will be very quiet and also produce significantly less particulate matter and CO2 than conventional diesel-powered refuse collection vehicles.

“One tank of the vehicle will definitely last for a day, which would be around 8 kg of hydrogen,” emphasises Dirk Nagel, Head of Waste Management. Organic waste, residual waste and paper can be collected. The hydrogen refuelling station at the transport company is now under construction so that the vehicle can soon be refuelled there. Refuelling at 700 bar will take around 10 minutes. The batteries have a guaranteed service life of eight years.
