The first green hydrogen boiler in Madrid to generate sustainable heating is up and running

Madrileña Red de Gas, leader in gas distribution in the Madrid region, has started up a green hydrogen boiler at one of its headquarters to generate heating and DHW (Domestic Hot Water) with a clean, safe and renewable fuel. The installation has been carried out with the collaboration of Vaillant, Centralgas, Carburos Metálicos and the Association of Companies in the Installations and Energy Sector (Agremia) at MRG’s operations centre in Alcorcón.

The boiler is a prototype loaned by Vaillant, approved in Spain, and prepared for 100% H2 use. With an output of 25 kW, it is equivalent in shape and size to a current natural gas boiler. The interior installation to conduct the renewable hydrogen from the storage to the boiler, carried out by Centralgas, has followed the fuel gas regulations currently in force and the materials used are the same as those used today in homes. The room in which the boiler has been installed will serve as a rest room for MRG staff, thus demonstrating the viability of using hydrogen in heating.

The presentation was attended by representatives of MRG and the companies collaborating in the project, such as the CEO of MRG, Alejandro Lafarga; its president, Pedro Mielgo; the Director of Expansion, David Ortiz; Gorka Barañano, Director of Marketing and Strategy at Vaillant; Swen Engelhaupt, Director of Group Market Quality at Vaillant; and Mónica Morera, Sales Director for the central area at Carburos Metálicos. For MRG’s Expansion Director, David Ortiz, “this installation shows that hydrogen boilers are a reality and that, when hydrogen is channelled through our networks, at Madrileña Red de Gas we will be ready to adapt heating to zero emissions”.

Madrileña Red de Gas continues its commitment to sustainability. Just a week ago, MRG signed a collaboration agreement with the Francisco de Vitoria University to develop green hydrogen technology, from its research to its implementation and development.hydrogen is a clean and inexhaustible alternative to the use of fossil fuels. Hydrogen can be used, for example, to produce heating and hot water with a boiler similar to the current natural gas boilers. The main advantage of hydrogen is that, in its combustion, it does not release polluting elements into the atmosphere, only water vapour, actively collaborating in the objective of decarbonisation.
