The first green hydrogen boiler in Madrid to generate sustainable heating is up and running

Madrileña Red de Gas, leader in gas distribution in the Madrid region, has started up a green hydrogen boiler at one of its headquarters to generate heating and DHW (Domestic Hot Water) with a clean, safe and renewable fuel. The installation has been carried out with the collaboration of Vaillant, Centralgas, Carburos Metálicos and the Association of Companies in the Installations and Energy Sector (Agremia) at MRG’s operations centre in Alcorcón.

The boiler is a prototype loaned by Vaillant, approved in Spain, and prepared for 100% H2 use. With an output of 25 kW, it is equivalent in shape and size to a current natural gas boiler. The interior installation to conduct the renewable hydrogen from the storage to the boiler, carried out by Centralgas, has followed the fuel gas regulations currently in force and the materials used are the same as those used today in homes. The room in which the boiler has been installed will serve as a rest room for MRG staff, thus demonstrating the viability of using hydrogen in heating.

Norsk Hydro: Recycled aluminium produced with green hydrogen will be used in electric buses from Irizar e-mobility

Irizar e-mobility, a Spanish customer of Hydro Extrusions, is the first company to use recycled aluminium produced with green hydrogen in their products. The aluminium profiles made with recycled aluminium will be used for bodywork in their electric vehicles.

The recycled aluminium made with green hydrogen was produced at Hydro’s recycling operation in Navarra, Spain in June. Since then, the material has undergone extensive testing to confirm that it lives up to the requirements for extrusion, fabrication and eventually use in Irizar e-mobility’s electric vehicles. The tests were successful and in early November, Irizar e-mobility placed the first order for aluminium profiles made with the special material.

Airborne supported Delft’s students from hydrogen racing team to drive first meters on new car

The new Forze IX of the Forze Hydrogen Racing team drove its first metres on the so-called superbattery at the Circuit of Zandvoort. With this milestone achieved, the next step is to integrate the hydrogen system into the car. The hydrogen racing car has a top speed of 300 kilometres per hour and will compete against the best production cars in the GT class of the Supercar Challenge. With the support of Airborne, the Delft students aim to demonstrate that hydrogen is not only sustainable, but also highly competitive on the track.

After starting with hydrogen-powered go-karts in 2008, Forze built the first full-size hydrogen racing car in 2013. Afterwards, the team evolved to building endurance racing cars and was the first to compete in an official race against conventional petrol racing cars. The previous model even finished on the podium during a race on the Circuit of Assen in 2019.

MAN Energy Solutions to Build Reactor for Renewable Fuels Splitting Biomethane into Hydrogen and Carbon

Cleantech start-up, CAPHENIA, has commissioned MAN Energy Solutions to build a Plasma Boudouard Reactor (PBR). This will form the core of CAPHENIA’s first production plant, ‘GERMANY I’, located at Industriepark Höchst in Frankfurt am Main, Germany where the company will produce its first renewable fuels in 2024.

The CAPHENIA technology utilises biomethane, CO2, water and sustainably-generated electricity to produce synthesis gas as a feedstock for renewable fuel production and many other chemical products. The synthesis gas will be used, for example, as a step in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), thus contributing to aviation decarbonisation.

The PBR developed by MAN will first split the supplied biomethane into hydrogen and carbon. In the next step, CO2 and water will be added to produce the synthesis gas; the reactor can produce 150 kg of synthesis gas per hour. This can subsequently be converted into Sustainable Aviation Fuel using the Fischer-Tropsch process.
