Salzgitter AG held a ground-breaking ceremony for the green steel plant where it will build a 100 MW electrolyser

The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the main building of the direct reduction plant in Salzgitter took place on 5 of December, the Salzgitter AG announced.

Salzgitter AG is implementing the first of three expansion stages of the SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking) programme on a construction site of around 1.5 square kilometres. SALCOS® stands for the transformation of the steel industry towards the green production of steel.

The first of three stages of the SALCOS® programme is currently being implemented. It includes the construction of a direct reduction plant, an electric arc furnace and a 100 MW electrolyser. These plants will enable large quantities of carbon to be saved using natural gas and hydrogen and around 1.9 million tonnes of low-CO2 crude steel to be produced each year.
