Using superconducting cable that has a current density over 100 times superior to that of normal copper wire, both the powertrain and the engine of the ASCEND demonstrator were operated in
cryogenic conditions that ensured no energy was wasted.
ZEROe project, ASCEND was designed to be a superconducting propulsion system that could share the cryogenic system of
hydrogen fuel cells onboard an aircraft, reducing weight, resistance and wasted energy.
Designed and built just outside of Toulouse, ASCEND underwent testing at Airbus’ E-Aircraft System facility in Ottobrunn, the largest facility of its kind in Europe.
