GKN Hydrogen to deliver large-scale stand alone hydrogen storage to Technische Universität Braunschweig

The first large-scale (500 kgs) stand alone hydrogen storage solutions was delivered to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Boulder, Colorado, USA, the GKN Hydrogen announced. In addition, another 500kg is ready to be delivered to the Research CenterTechnische Universität Braunschweig.

The deployment of these two hydrogen projects is a technological masterpiece of R&D, project management, manufacturing excellence, logistics and much more.

Our GKN Hydrogen crew  in Germany, Italy and the USA, are proud to deliver the first large-scale metal hydride hydrogen storage to the USA.

It is now being integrated into the energy infrastructure at NREL to demonstrate how ultra safe solid-state hydrogen performs at MW scale. The project is located on NREL’s Flatirons Campus in Colorado, where our solution takes hydrogen directly from a NEL MW-scale PEM electrolyzer without compression and stores it indefinitely without losses. When needed, the hydrogen flows to a MW-scale Toyota fuel cell, without compression, to meet the sites electricity needs.

Our inherently safe energy storage is a critical enabler for “power-to-power” and “power-to-gas” renewable energy systems, as the times of renewable energy generation do not always coincide with the times of hydrogen or electricity demand.
