SoCalGas: HY2MEGA metal hydride storage subsystem has officially arrived at NREL

SoCalGas, the largest gas distribution utility in the United States, announced, that the highly anticipated HY2MEGA metal hydride storage subsystem has officially arrived at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (headquartered in Golden, Colorado)

Developed by GKN Hydrogen, this hydrogen storage subsystem requires no compression, operates at modest temperatures (20-65 deg C), and has the potential to offer a safe, energy-efficient and low-maintenance solution for long-duration energy storage. This demonstration at NREL holds the promise of advancing hydrogen technologies by validating H2 storage performance at the MW scale using renewable energy, and identifying key use cases for the commercial deployment of H2 storage technologies.

Once operational, this installation will mark the largest-ever metal hydride energy storage system, potentially connecting hydrogen to renewable power generation at the MW scale.
