Yamaha Motor to Exhibit Prototype Hydrogen Outboard Motor at 2024 Miami International Boat Show
Yamaha Motor Co., announced that it will be exhibiting a prototype hydrogen-powered outboard motor at the Miami International Boat Show, one of the world’s largest boat shows, scheduled to be held from February 14 to 18, 2024 in Miami, Florida, USA.
Marine products run through water and are thus subjected to water resistance, requiring significantly more energy for propulsion than land vehicles. Additionally, the performance and engineering requirements for marine products can vary widely depending on the usage environment-such as the ocean, rivers, or lakes-as well as the usage itself, from commercial fishing to recreation. In order to achieve carbon neutrality with marine products while facing such challenges, the company is promoting a multi-directional development approach, looking to other new energy sources and technologies in addition to its electrification efforts.

CNX Provides Update on Hydrogen Project Location and 45V Hydrogen Production Tax Credit Rules
Citing delays and increasing uncertainty over implementation rules guiding the use of the 45V hydrogen production tax credit provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and an inability to reach final commercial terms with project developers, CNX Resources Corporation announced it has ended coordination with the Adams Fork project and is evaluating several viable alternative sites in southern West Virginia for clean hydrogen projects.
The Company remains committed to supporting the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) via use of its local, low cost, low carbon intensity feedstock, which is ideal for affordable, clean hydrogen production in historically disadvantaged energy communities across Appalachia. CNX’s final investment decision remains contingent upon tax credit guidance that unambiguously supports low carbon intensity feedstock projects that will facilitate development of the regional clean hydrogen hubs, including ARCH2.

Verne and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory achieve cryo-compressed hydrogen storage record
Verne and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) demonstrated a single cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2) system with a capacity of 29 kilograms, close to three times greater capacity than previously known examples. This system is the first CcH2 system large enough for use in heavy-duty transportation systems. For example, two such systems can be frame-mounted to a Class 8 truck, and enable a range of over 500 miles, according to Verne analysis.
Heavy-duty vehicles including trucks, ships and planes are responsible for 23 percent of U.S. GHG emissions, yet are difficult to decarbonize due to their high energy requirements. Current battery electric and hydrogen storage methods (liquid and compressed gas) do not provide sufficient energy density to power Class 8 trucks. CcH2 achieves 27 percent greater hydrogen storage density than liquid hydrogen and more than 75 percent greater hydrogen storage density than compressed gaseous hydrogen. The energy stored in Verne’s 29 kilogram CcH2 tank is roughly equivalent to a one-megawatt-hour battery storage system, while weighing only about 400 kg versus the one-megawatt-hour battery which weighs around 5,000 kg. This magnitude improvement in gravimetric energy density is a major reason why hydrogen is the preferred fuel for the heavy-duty industry.

GM and Komatsu collaborate on hydrogen fuel cell-powered mining truck
General Motors and Komatsu will co-develop a hydrogen fuel cell power module for Komatsu’s 930E electric drive mining truck, the world’s best-selling ultra-class haul truck. GM, a leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, and Komatsu, a global manufacturer of mining and construction equipment, will jointly design and validate the technology.
Lightweight and quick to refuel, hydrogen fuel cells are ideal for electrifying applications traditionally powered by diesel engines. Hydrogen provides an effective method to package large quantities of energy onboard the vehicle, without compromising payload carrying capacity.
Additionally, fuel cells provide an excellent zero tailpipe emissions solution for vehicles with extreme hauling requirements, like the Komatsu 930E mining truck, with its nominal payload of 320 tons. These vehicles typically operate at a single mine throughout their life, which simplifies the challenges of sizing and deploying an effective hydrogen refueling infrastructure to service the vehicle fleet.

Veidekke: The world’s first asphalt plant on hydrogen
Thanks to a small industrial wonder at Veidekke’s asphalt factory in Kristiansund, 3,000 tonnes of asphalt were produced using hydrogen as the sole energy source. This is the first time in history that asphalt is produced without greenhouse gas emissions, and the plant has been developed in close cooperation with the German industrial group Benninghoven and supported by Enova, the Veidekke announced.
“The asphalt contractors, customers and authorities in Norway have all set tough climate targets. But it is impossible to achieve the necessary reductions with the current focus primarily on electric vehicles and machinery. These account for less than 20% of the total emissions from raw materials, production and laying of asphalt in Norway. The use of hydrogen in the plants alone can reduce overall emissions by 40%, and the environment doesn’t distinguish between direct and indirect emissions,” says Martin Holmqvist, director of Veidekke Asphalt.
