Five German companies will put hydrogen trucks from Daimler Truck on the roads in 2024

Five Mercedes Benz GenH2 Trucks will take to the public roads in Germany this year to transport goods from companies such as Amazon, Air Products, Ineos, Holcim and Wiedmann & Winz.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks prefers liquid hydrogen. The two stainless-steel liquid-hydrogen tanks intended for the series version of the GenH2 Truck will have a particularly high storage capacity of 80 kilograms (40 kg each) for covering long distances, the Daimler truck stated on its site. The stainless-steel tank system consists of two tubes, one within the other, that are connected to each other and vacuum-insulated.

In the series version of the GenH2 Truck, the fuel-cell system is to supply 2 x150 kilowatts and the battery is to provide an additional 400 kW temporarily. At 70 kWh, the storage capacity of the battery is relatively low, as it is not intended to meet energy needs, but mainly to be switched on to provide situational power support for the fuel cell, for example during peak loads while accelerating or while driving uphill fully loaded. At the same time, the relatively light battery allows a higher payload. It is to be recharged in series-production vehicles with braking energy and excess fuel-cell energy. A core element of the sophisticated operating strategy of the fuel-cell and battery system is a cooling and heating system that keeps all components at the ideal operating temperature, thus ensuring maximum durability. In a pre-series version, the two electric motors are designed for a total of 2 x 230 kW continuous power and 2 x 330 kW maximum power. Torque is 2 x 1577 Nm and 2 x 2071 Nm respectively.

German INES criticised the planning figures of the national hydrogen core network under construction

On commission by the Initiative Energien Speichern e.V. (INES), Aurora Energy Research GmbH has prepared a brief analysis of the hydrogen core grid, the company announced. The initial assessments suggest that a more detailed analysis is necessary in order to identify the selection of robust core grid parts and to carry out the overbuilding of the grid and import capacities in a targeted manner. In particular, different demand and supply scenarios should be considered when planning the hydrogen network and the resulting import capacities in order to achieve efficient development of the hydrogen networks.

As part of the National Hydrogen Strategy (NWS) and in accordance with Section 28r of the EnWG-E, the transmission system operators (TSOs) submitted a draft application to the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) on November 15, 2023 for the development of an efficient hydrogen network infrastructure. The draft proposes the creation of a hydrogen network with a pipeline length of 9,721 km. The proposed hydrogen network would have a total of 13 cross-border interconnection points (GÜP), which would enable hydrogen imports and exports with a capacity of up to 59 GWh/h. It is designed for a hydrogen consumption volume of 279 TWh. The hydrogen network should be fully operational by 2032. Aurora Energy Research GmbH carried out a brief analysis of the draft proposal on behalf of INES.

Thyssenkrupp boss calls for new hydrogen pipelines from  Spain, Portugal and Morocco

Thyssenkrupp CEO Miguel López has called for the construction of new hydrogen pipelines from southern Europe. Germany needs pipelines from countries such as Spain, Portugal and Morocco, López told the “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung” (WAZ) according to a report published on 2 January. “We need pipelines from the west and south of Europe,” said the manager. “Otherwise it will hardly be possible to meet the huge demand for hydrogen in Germany.”

The supply of hydrogen is also necessary for the establishment of green steel production in Duisburg. The company needs a connection to the hydrogen core network that Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) is planning. “The hydrogen requirements of our new DRI plant are enormous,” López told the newspaper. DRI stands for direct reduced iron. Instead of coal and coke, the plant uses natural gas and later hydrogen to extract the oxygen from the iron ore. The sponge iron obtained is then melted down in a further step. In Duisburg, the plant will replace a traditional blast furnace.
