Airbus has powered propulsion system prototype with hydrogen fuel cells, designed for electric concept aircraft

“The ZEROe team recently reached a critical milestone in their quest to bring a hydrogen-powered aircraft to the skies by 2035”, Sabine Klauke, Chief Technical Officer at Airbus reported in her LinkedIn. “The propulsion system prototype, designed for our electric concept aircraft, was powered on at 1.2 megawatts, at our E-Aircraft System House, in Munich.  That’s enough energy to power 12 electric cars! The iron pod contains the hydrogen fuel cells and the electric engine powertrain that will power each of the concept aircraft’s propellers. Several of them will be needed to get an aircraft off the ground, and we are due to test one in flight on our A380  test platform in 2026”.
