Hydrogen car created by Bosch and Ligier to debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June

The Ligier JS2 RH2 hydrogen car created by Bosch and Ligier engineers has passed its speed test, reaching a top speed of more than 280 km/h;

On Saturday, 15 June 2024, during the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ligier JS2 RH2 will take part in the world debut of the first demonstration lap designed for hydrogen racing cars, Electric motor news reported.

The Ligier JS2 RH2 with hydrogen engine is based on the Ligier JS2 R, a racing car originally designed for a 3.7-liter gasoline engine. In the course of the development of the H2 demonstrator, the vehicle had to be extensively modified.

The 3.0-litre V6 engine with biturbo charging already produces 420 kilowatts. It is based on a series-production gasoline engine that the experts at Bosch Engineering have converted to the use of hydrogen. In particular, the ignition and the entire injection system were adapted. By systematic application, a high power of 443 kW, a torque of 650 Nm and a very good response of the engine in transient operation could be achieved. The H2 tanks are designed for a system pressure of 700 bar and are made of carbon. In order to find the best possible package of tanks, 1-D driving simulations were carried out with rides on racetracks. The best possible package was a concept with three tanks: one behind the passenger cell and two on the side of the vehicle sills on the left and right. Volume of a tank 53,4 l, size 368/878 mm.
