Bureau Veritas has awarded “AiP” to Genevos for their newly launched 250 kW Hydrogen Power Module
Classification society Bureau Veritas (“BV”) has awarded Approval in Principle (“AiP”) to Genevos for their newly launched 250 kW Hydrogen Power Module (“HPM-250”) marine fuel cell.
The HPM-250, deployed to meet the growing demands of zero emission coastal and offshore vessels, is on track to secure Type Approval in 2025.
Genevos has reached a new milestone in their development strategy with the launch of a next-generation marine fuel cell, the HPM-250. This high-power solution has been developed in response to the increasing availability of green hydrogen, the strong advances in emissions regulations, and the building environmental pressure to reduce underwater noise for the protection of marine life.
The AiP awarded by BV confirms that Genevos are on course for achieving Type Approval in 2025 for the 250 kW power system, enabling clients to benefit from a fully-integrated and validated marine certified system: a plug-and-play solution made safe and simple for integrators and OEMs. This modular drop-in solution offers high scalability and redundancy, whilst operating with no vibration, reducing maintenance requirements and conforming to zero emission regulations.
The energy intensive and long offshore operational times demanded by cargo ships, offshore workboats, and coastal ferries contribute significantly to the footprint of the maritime sector. As a confirmed supplier for several flagship projects including offshore service vessels, high-speed passenger vessels, and fishing vessels, Genevos is playing a key role in demonstrating how marine fuel cells can significantly reduce the impact of commercial operations across the maritime sector.

Feasibility Analysis of Hydrogen and Battery Electric Locomotives in California
CARB staff (California air resources board) analyzed the feasibility of using current battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell zero emission (ZE) locomotive technologies from the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) to Barstow, a high-traffic freight route in California. For a train to complete a trip from POLA to Barstow, there must be sufficient power and energy supplied from the locomotives throughout the trip. To determine the number of current ZE locomotives required to pull 130 double stacked railcars from POLA to Barstow, power and energy required to complete the trip needed to be calculated while taking into account length of trip, track grade, rolling resistance, and drag. Once the power and energy required to complete the trip were calculated, staff were able to determine the minimum number of ZE locomotives required to supply the power and energy needed. The ZE locomotive models being evaluated in this analysis are Wabtec’s FLXdrive Heavy-Haul battery electric locomotive, Progress Rail’s SD70J-BB battery electric locomotive, and CPKC’s hydrogen fuel cell locomotive with a tender car to carry hydrogen fuel. These models were chosen as they are rated for line haul operation and could be used by Class I railroads.

A world-leading vehicle manufacturer is testing custom-made cell material from Smoltek
Smoltek Nanotech Holding AB announces that one of the world’s largest vehicle manufacturers is testing custom-made prototypes of a cell material that can significantly reduce the amount of iridium in an electrolyzer cell. The custom-made prototypes delivered by the subsidiary Smoltek Hydrogen have the potential to reduce the iridium load in electrolyzer cells by 95% compared to today’s commercial materials, which is a prerequisite for large-scale production of fossil-free hydrogen.
The prototypes are based on Smoltek’s unique and patent-protected carbon nanotechnology, where the objective is to reduce the iridium load in the anode electrode in electrolyzer cells by 95% (which corresponds to 0.1 mg iridium/cm2), compared to today’s commercial materials (which use 2.0 mg iridium/cm2). Smoltek Hydrogen has already proven in long-term tests that the company’s cell material can produce the same amount of hydrogen at only 0.2 mg iridium/cm2, which makes it hopeful of reaching the final goal of 0.1 mg iridium/cm2.

Hydrocell presents control unit for hydrogen and electric marine drives
Hydrocell will present at the Salone Nautico Venezia (May 29 – June 2, 2024) the project for the refitting of the boat “Nobody’s Perfect,” a 17-meter-long ship built in Bordeaux in 1978. The “Nobody’s Perfect” will feature the first hydrogen propulsion system controlled by a control unit developed by Hydrocell.
Imagine a fuel cell as the heart of the drive, and Hydrocell offers with “HYMAR control” a high-tech brain capable of adapting and controlling any type of propulsion system, the company reported.
The innovation of Hydrocell, a South Tyrolean company, lies in the ability to combine propulsion systems with different characteristics. The solution proposed by Hydrocell can adapt to any drive because it is modular and integrable. An “intelligent” ECU capable of analyzing the different characteristics of each engine guarantees perfect and efficient control. In this way, all the advantages of hydrogen can be exploited: greater range and faster refueling, no emissions, lower investments with greater range.
