The German Government has adopted the import strategy for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives. According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), the strategy is therefore an ‘essential building block of German hydrogen policy’. The paper is intended to complement the National Hydrogen Strategy and the development of domestic H2 production.
According to the BMWK, the German government is assuming a national demand for hydrogen and its derivatives of 95 to 130 TWh in 2030. More than half of this would have to be imported from abroad: 50 to 70 % (45 to 90 TWh), the BMWK forecasts. This import share will continue to increase after 2030.
This is because the ministry expects hydrogen demand to increase to 360 to 500 TWh and around 200 TWh of hydrogen derivatives by 2045. The aim of the import strategy is therefore to cover Germany’s import requirements and ensure a ‘resilient supply’.
