Enapter: CICITEM’s hydrogen project in Chile can be scaled up

In Chile’s Antofagasta region – its second-largest and a crucial hub for renewable energy development – significant strides are being made toward building a green hydrogen economy, the German Enapter reported.

The region is home to the country’s first mobile green hydrogen plant, which is fully operational and generating green hydrogen.

Powered by a 33 kWp mobile photovoltaic system, this plant features 8 EnapterAEM Electrolysers. It was integrated by our local partner TRA | Tecnologías de Remediación Ambiental (Busso Group) in collaboration with Vespek.

The scientific research driving this project is led by Centro Científico Tecnológico Región de Antofagasta – CICITEM, with the primary objective of quantifying the potential for green hydrogen generation from photovoltaic energy in the Antofagasta region.

Chile aims to produce and export the world’s most competitive renewable hydrogen by 2030, positioning the Antofagasta region as a global leader in this emerging industry.

One of the key advantages of this mobile pilot plant is its ability to assess equipment performance under real-world conditions across different locations.

It examines critical factors like:

• Altitude

• Humidity

• Solar radiation

This allows for precise quantification of the region’s potential and competitive edge in hydrogen generation.

In areas with high solar radiation, hydrogen production costs are anticipated to be competitive with current fossil fuels – a key milestone in Chile’s decarbonisation efforts.

According to project director Dr Lindley Maxwell, the plan is to scale the project further to support additional hydrogen applications beyond pure research and data collection.
