The first refurbished TGM4 with a hydrogen power plant is expected to be ready for operation in the port of Riga by the end of this year. Exclusively for ROLLINGSTOCK, the Spanish company has provided exterior renderings of a future vehicle developed in collaboration with Aurora Engineering s.r.o. from Czechia (see https://lnkd.in/eQv5P2rS for details).
The agreement between COOLERGY S.L. and Hanko Trans, Estonia, was signed in early 2024 to upgrade 12 TGM4 diesel locomotives operating in Riga (for further information, go to https://lnkd.in/ehp4Bc4q). Each vehicle will be equipped with four 80 kW Toyota fuel cells. The Riga Free Port has agreed to pilot operation, so it will continue to use all 12 locomotives after the conversion to liquid hydrogen.
According to Coolergy, the conversion project has received a €500,000 grant from the Latvian Energy and Transport Competence Centre ETKC. Most of the work to convert the diesel locomotives will be carried out in Riga, while the fuel will be produced in production and liquefaction facilities with an output of up to 2 t of hydrogen per day, to be built by the Spanish company in Estonia.
