The hydrogen-powered Modula BFC locomotive is to be used at the new Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT), the largest combined transport terminal in the European hinterland, which will be operated completely climate-neutrally with the help of its own photovoltaic system and hydrogen, the Vossloh Rolling Stock announced.
The first hydrogen-powered locomotive will soon be travelling through the port of Duisburg, duisport rail GmbH also reported. The colleagues from duisport rail presented the ‘Modula BFC’ together with Vossloh Rolling Stock at InnoTrans in Berlin.
Hans-Georg Christiansen, Managing Director of duisport rail GmbH: ‘With the battery-hydrogen fuel cell locomotive, we are sending an important signal for rail as a mode of transport and, in particular, for rail freight transport on the further path to decarbonisation.’
The Modula hybrid locomotive platform is both adaptable and future-proof. In addition to utilising low-emission technologies, energy sources can be flexibly combined to meet specific needs.
Lars Nennhaus, duisport Board Member for Technology and Operations: ‘With the purchase of the Modula BFC, we are once again emphasising our claim to be an innovation leader. As one of Europe’s leading logistics hubs, we are actively shaping the energy and transport transition. The new locomotive is another piece of the puzzle on the way to making Duisburg the hydrogen capital.’
