Groningen-based construction supplier, BMN commissions hydrogen truck

BMN from Groningen will soon deliver building materials with a truck running on hydrogen. The wholesaler was able to purchase the truck with a subsidy from the province of Groningen. Thursday 24 October saw the festive delivery of the first truck to the company on the Euvelgunne industrial estate.

The province of Groningen granted over €1 million subsidy to car dealer Groenewold and Dijkhuizen of Delfzijl for the purchase of six hydrogen trucks from Hyundai in 2023. A grant condition is that the truck will remain in operation in the northern provinces for at least five years. The knowledge gained by the hydrogen-powered companies can help further green the transport sector.

With the subsidy, the province wants to initiate the development of sustainable transport in the province. Also for the heavier trucks. Making the transport sector more sustainable is not easy because hydrogen trucks are a lot more expensive than regular fuel trucks.

The truck can drive about 450 kilometres on a full tank. Refuelling is possible in Groningen, Delfzijl, Assen and Emmen, among other places. The number of hydrogen filling stations is important for the efficient deployment of the truck.

The province of Groningen recently purchased a hydrogen truck for its own operations, such as transporting soil and waste and hauling sand or concrete tiles. Soon, this truck will also hit the road.
