CAF, DLR, RENFE, TOYOTA and partners present the results of a 4-year hydrogen train project in Zaragosa

The FCH2Rail project is being developed by a consortium made up of CAF, DLR, Toyota, Renfe, Adif, CNH2, IP and Stemmann-Technik, with a budget of 14 million euros.

The closing event of the FCH2Rail project was held at the same time as the RailLive! 2024 congress, which is taking place these days in the city of Zaragoza. The project has developed a bimodal demonstration train powered by hydrogen fuel cells over the last four years and tested it on the Spanish and Portuguese railway network.

The event began with a presentation on the development of the project and a detailed overview of the main highlights and achievements. Renfe’s Director of Global Strategy, Paloma Baena, Jose Conrado and Iosu Ibarbia, CTOs of Adif and CAF, and Emilio Nieto, Director of CNH2, discussed the results and strategic conclusions of the FCH2RAIL project in a panel discussion. The hydrogen train was then visited. Visitors were able to experience the hydrogen train live on a journey between the CAF site in Zaragoza and the train station in Villanueva de Gallego. The event was attended by Valérie Bouillon-Delporte, Director of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, as well as key executives from the companies involved in the project and other companies that have actively supported the project. The FCH2RAIL project had a planned duration of 4 years and a budget of over 14 million euros, of which around 70% was financed by European funds. It started in January 2021 when the FCH JU (now replaced by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership), the European Commission agency promoting the development of hydrogen and fuel cells, selected the FCH2RAIL project. The project goal of developing an innovative hydrogen-powered prototype train was achieved with flying colors by the project partners CAF, DLR, RENFE, TOYOTA MOTOR EUROPE, ADIF, IP, CNH2 and FAIVELEY Stemmann Technik.
