The Norwegian government agency Enova SF will provide subsidies for the construction of seven ammonia-powered ships, two hydrogen-powered ships and five electric ships, plus one charging station.
This concerns appropriations related to the programs “Ammoniakk i fartøy”, “Hydrogen i fartøy” and “Batteri i nullutslippsskip”.
The ships must be built with zero emissions and be able to sail emission-free from day one.
– Hydrogen and ammonia will be important energy carriers in the era of the “green” shift, and investing in green shipping is right and necessary. It provides jobs all over the country and contributes to Norwegian business life competing at the top of the world, says Minister of Climate and Environment Tore Ø. Sandvik.
– Enova is an important instrument for achieving the government’s climate goals. That is why the government has almost tripled Enova’s funding from NOK 3.3 billion to NOK 9.2 billion since it took office, he says.
In total, more than NOK 940 million has been allocated for hydrogen and ammonia projects on board ships.
The aim is to demonstrate hydrogen and ammonia as zero-emission solutions in the maritime industry by establishing the first functioning hydrogen and ammonia value chains in Norway.
“With this, the Norwegian maritime industry is taking important new steps towards zero-emission shipping,” says Enova CEO Niels Christian Nakstad.
“To build this value chain, it is important to have both a sufficient number of ships and the production and bunkering of hydrogen and ammonia,” he says.
And he adds:
“This is an important step in implementing investments towards 2030, which will be a springboard for the transition to 2050,” he says.
