ERDC celebrates Army’s first hydrogen-powered nanogrid
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has unveiled a cutting-edge hydrogen-powered small microgrid (nanogrid) at the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico. This innovative demonstration represents a team effort led by ERDC, partnering with the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) Environmental Division at WSMR and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, known as DEVCOM, Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Atmospheric Intelligence for Hybrid Power Advancements (AIHPA). Notably, this will be the first operational nanogrid of its kind in the Army.
A nanogrid is a small self-contained electric power system that can operate independently from the electric power grid, and it can supply power to improve resilience to potential power outages or to areas where there is no grid power. The nanogrid at WSMR uses renewable hydrogen fuel to replace traditional bulky, noisy diesel generators. It provides power to a surveillance camera system and meteorological weather equipment, supporting continuous, unattended operation in a remote off-grid location. The nanogrid enables this equipment to operate in the particular location where “silent watch” capabilities of hydrogen-powered generation are needed in a pristine environment.

M1000 Hydrogen-powered HySE-X2 makes impressive start in the Mission 1000 category at the 47th Dakar Rally
BISHA (SAUDI ARABIA) – Saturday, January 4: The revolutionary hydrogen-powered HySE-X2 has made an impressive start to its second Dakar Rally campaign in the Mission 1000 category for machines of the future, the Hydrogen Small mobility & Engine technology Association announced.
The HySE (Hydrogen Small mobility & Engine technology Association) has entered a revised SSV in the Dakar’s Mission 1000 section, which was introduced last year as part of the Dakar Future Programme to encourage manufacturers to develop next-generation carbon-neutral powertrain technologies.
For 2025, Japanese driver Yoshio Ikemachi has teamed up with Portuguese navigator Paulo Marques to crew the HySE-X2. Ikemachi finished 10th overall in the motorcycle category at the 2000 Dakar Rally and competed in the veteran class last year, finishing 60th overall, in his eighth Dakar. Marques first tackled the Dakar in 1997 and finished eighth on a motorcycle, the year the duo met and became friends for the first time.
They safely negotiated the 28.92km Prologue stage, near Bisha, on Friday (January 3rd), scoring the permitted 10 points for completing the day’s distance and an additional five for finishing the day in normal drive mode.
The HySE-X2 then tackled the challenging opening special stage of 93km that looped through the deserts around the event’s start camp at Bisha on Saturday, with the day’s route also including a pair of non-competitive road liaison sections of 130km and 124km. They encountered no issues after another strong performance.
Quotes after Stage 1 on Saturday, January 4th
Yoshio Ikemachi, Driver:
“Today’s stage was 93km, so I tried to adjust the fuel economy as much as possible. I also changed fourth, fifth and sixth gears depending on the location, which I think worked quite well for fuel economy. I also checked the tank temperature throughout the race and it was good that it dropped more slowly in the second half.
“There was a lot of sand, so fuel was consumed no matter what, so I drove while thinking about whether to switch to four-wheel drive or change gears. I feel like the engine could be faster, but today I focused on fuel economy with the goal of finishing the stage. I set a goal of leaving 40% fuel at the CP (passage control) and it worked out just as I intended, so I was able to finish the stage with plenty of time to spare.”
Paulo Marques, Co-driver:
“We did a good job. The car was good, no problem. In the sand, there were no problems. We didn’t push.”
Daichi Kai, Team Leader of HySE Dakar Project:
“We would like to thank our mechanics for working hard until yesterday, despite issues that are unique to the properties of hydrogen. Today’s run was characterised as a test, but we are relieved that it was completed without any problems. We will thoroughly analyse the data we obtained and prepare the car for tomorrow’s stage.
“Today’s run was our first long one after we refined the engine settings, so it was a challenging day for us. We’d like to thank our driver and co-driver for bringing us valuable data safely all the way to the finish line.”
Quotes after the Prologue stage on Friday, January 3rd
Yoshio Ikemachi, Driver:
“The car is very good. We did some nice driving. We will focus on reaching the finish every day. We really enjoyed the stage.”
The HySE-X2 project was established in May 2023 and is based out of Tokyo. It is a joint venture between Kawasaki Motors Ltd., Suzuki Motor Corporation, Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd., Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., Toyota Motor Corporation and DENSO Corporation. The chassis is built by Overdrive Racing, the Belgian car preparations company.
The HySE-X2 called upon all the feedback gained from the inaugural HySE-X1 project in 2024 with ongoing development work carried out on the liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder supercharged 998cc engine and the chassis to improve fuel consumption in the mid-range and increase the fuel capacity with the addition of a fourth hydrogen tank for an additional 7.5kg of hydrogen. Refuelling and maintenance is being carried out on the Dakar Rally by Overdrive Racing.
Tomorrow (Sunday), marks the start of a 48-hour Marathon stage that takes competitors from Bisha into the remote Saudi Arabian desert. Part one of the stage for the Mission 1000 entrants includes a special stage of 86km in a day’s route of 464km.
After a night camped out under the stars, the two-part stage concludes with a competitive section of 109km in a second day’s route of 189km before the return to the base camp in Bisha.
Before the finish of the world’s most demanding off-road rally in the remote Saudi Arabian desert outpost town of Shubaytah on January 17th, Mission 1000 competitors will tackle 1,162 competitive kilometres in a route of 4,811km.

Asahi Kasei receives governmental support to expand manufacturing capacity for green hydrogen production equipment
Asahi Kasei has received governmental support for the expansion of its manufacturing capacity for cell frames and membranes of alkaline water electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen at its plant site in Kawasaki, Japan.
Driven by expectations for green hydrogen as a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels, the annual installed capacity of water electrolyzers globally is forecasted to reach 31 GW by 2030. As such, the manufacturing capacity for electrolyzers and related components needs to be scaled up in order to keep pace with the expanding demand for the production of hydrogen.
Asahi Kasei is a comprehensive manufacturer and provider of alkaline water electrolyzers for the production of hydrogen. Within the abovementioned governmental program, Asahi Kasei proposed to build new plants for both cell frames and membranes for electrolysis having manufacturing capacity of at least 2 GW each at the company’s plant site in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, by 2028. On December 18, the Japanese Government adopted this proposal for financial support. The total capital investment for this project is estimated to be approximately ¥35 billion, and Asahi Kasei expects to receive a subsidy of up to ¥11.4 billion through this initiative.
Including the current manufacturing capacity for Asahi Kasei’s ion-exchange membrane chlor-alkali electrolysis process, this expansion will raise the company’s total annual capacity for cell frames and membranes to more than 3 GW.
Asahi Kasei aims to create synergies between its two electrolysis businesses by establishing a system that can respond to both the uncertain expansion of the hydrogen market and the growing demand in the chlor-alkali electrolysis business, which has earned a high level of trust and market share from customers around the world.

MIBGAS and DH2 Energy launch the first renewable hydrogen auction on the iberian market
MIBGAS Derivatives, the Iberian gas futures market operator, and DH2 Energy, a green hydrogen developer and producer, are launching the first auction for the purchase of renewable hydrogen on the Iberian market. The process is organized on the public MIBGAS website for those interested in participating in this open auction.
The auction is aimed at all companies interested in acquiring renewable hydrogen, both nationally and internationally, without restrictions on the type of application for the hydrogen. Different lots will be offered depending on the volume of supply and the duration of the contract, starting from a base price for each lot.
The first phase is the pre-qualification phase (starting tomorrow). The next phase will be the qualification stage, and subsequently, there will be another phase solely for the qualified companies to submit their bids. This final phase will be competitive. As a result, the companies that present the best offers and are selected, along with DH2 Energy, will negotiate the final agreements bilaterally, which may lead to the corresponding contracts.
Participants will be able to submit bids to purchase the renewable hydrogen generated by DH2’s Hysencia plant. The plant is in Aragón and construction is expected to begin in mid-2025, with operations anticipated to commence in the first half of 2027.
The Hysencia plant, with an electrolysis capacity of 35 MW, 49 MWp of photovoltaic power and 10 MW of grid connection is a pioneering initiative that was a winner in the first European auction, funded by the Innovation Fund under the umbrella of the EU Hydrogen Bank. Hysencia, which obtained integrated environmental approval this year, is one of the first commercial green hydrogen projects on the Iberian Peninsula. The renewable hydrogen produced by Hysencia will help decarbonise the industrial and mobility sectors.

BioH2Ref’s on-farm hydrogen production project declared successful completion
The “BioH2Ref” project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, successfully completes on December 31, 2024, the BtX energy GmbH announced.
In this project, together with the sister company e-flox GmbH, the Department for Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering, RWTH Aachen University, support from the sister project of the Technical University of Munich and the Schleupen family from Lefkeshof in Krefeld, project has made a technology that is unique in the world socially acceptable: hydrogen directly from the farm, clean and environmentally friendly like organic milk from the farm shop. In April, the project received the first valid certificate for green hydrogen on the fuel market in all of Germany, and to round things off, there was a surprise from Santa Claus: hydrogen 5.0, which can be filled between the fermenter and the stable without contamination.
Three hard but successful years of the project are coming to an end, with an early Christmas present in the form of an A4 sheet of technical data. In the last year of the project, project achieved and exceeded all of its goals in week and night shifts. Like any research facility, the plant had the usual start-up difficulties. Parameter studies and different control scenarios on the test bench, with scientific support, led to an increase in the plant efficiency from 45 to 60% and the achievable nominal output from 70 to over 110%. The purity of the hydrogen according to DIN 17124 for fuel cell vehicles has already been confirmed several times, but one thing was still pending until the end: the technical purity of 99.999%, known in technical jargon as 5.0 – the measure of value on the technical gases market.

Hydrogen pilot project SinneWetterstof in Friesland terminated
The SinneWetterstof pilot in Oosterwolde (Friesland), a collaboration between grid operator Alliander and renewable energy developer GroenLeven, is being terminated. During this pilot, both parties investigated whether the production of green hydrogen could be a solution to combat congestion on the electricity grid. Now that the first experiences have been gained, it is being investigated whether the hydrogen installation in Oosterwolde can be transferred to another owner.
In 2022, Alliander opened the very first domestic hydrogen factory in Oosterwolde next to a solar park developed by GroenLeven. With this, both parties wanted to investigate with a small-scale electrolyser how hydrogen can play a role in the congestion problem on the electricity grid. The research examined, among other things, whether traffic jams on the electricity grid can be reduced or prevented and whether hydrogen is a solution to prevent expansion of the grid.
At the start of the pilot, the intention was to produce 100,000 kilograms of hydrogen annually. Due to various challenges in the start-up of the installation, this objective has not yet been achieved. Nevertheless, green hydrogen has been produced on a limited scale in the past period with various system tests. However, this was insufficient to answer the original learning objectives. The tests carried out did provide several useful insights into the way in which an electrolyser can function alongside a solar park, for example. An important lesson is also that the suppliers of components for this type of installation were not yet optimally attuned to each other. In addition, much was still unclear in the permit procedure at the start of the pilot. For the permit issuer, this pilot has therefore provided frameworks for granting permits. All in all, the pilot has gained valuable insights into the production of green hydrogen for both Alliander and GroenLeven. This contributes to the joint mission to develop innovative solutions for a sustainable energy system.
The development of hydrogen production is not standing still. There are also now more options to prevent congestion on the electricity grid. For example, with flexible contracts. This allows entrepreneurs to make specific agreements with the grid operator to supply their generated electricity under certain conditions. Now that electrolysers are increasingly emerging as part of a new energy system, it is no longer necessary for Alliander to maintain its own electrolyser. It has therefore been decided to end the SinneWetterstof pilot earlier than the planned five years.
In the coming weeks, Alliander will complete the tests. In addition, a party is being sought that wants to take over the hydrogen installation. After a takeover, Alliander will no longer be involved and will therefore no longer carry out any tests. However, Alliander will continue to emphasise the importance of hydrogen. After all, hydrogen will play a major role in the energy transition. New initiatives are emerging in many places that are being followed with interest by the network company.

EU anti-dumping investigation against Chinese producers steel cylinders including for hydrogen
A coalition of major seamless steel cylinder manufacturers, who are members of the European Cylinders Manufacturers Association (ECMA), have filed a complaint against dumping and obtained an anti-dumping investigation from the European Commission into extremely cheap imports of high pressure steel cylinders from China. These cylinders are of Chinese origin and have been massively marketed in the European Union in recent years at prices often below the cost of production of European cylinders manufacturers.
A European coalition made up of Cylinders Holding a.s., Eurocylinder Systems AG, Faber Industrie S.p.A, Dalmine S.p.A and Worthington Cylinders GmbH points to manifestly unfair competition. “We welcome fair competition, but it is patently unfair to compete with a product whose selling price does not even cover the material and energy costs of a European cylinder manufacturer, let alone the production costs. Producers in the PRC are not bound by the social, economic and environmental regulations that govern producers in Europe. In addition, Chinese cylinder manufacturers benefit from significant cost distortions through subsidy mechanisms, which give them an unfair advantage when exporting to the EU. Together with our legal team, we believe we have a very strong case that we hope will lead to the introduction of tariffs to restore a level playing field across Europe,” said the coalition of five producers.
