More and more Deutsche Bahn (DB) trains and locomotives are being powered electrically, with new drive concepts or climate-friendly fuels. A test center for the conversion and testing of hydrogen combustion engines is now to be set up at DB Vehicle Maintenance in Bremen together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Applied Materials Research IFAM. This was agreed by DB and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen in a “Memorandum of Understanding”.

The first step will be to research how today’s combustion engines can be converted to run on hydrogen. Bremen should become a “beacon for low-CO2 engine conversion,” says the statement signed today by Bremen’s mayor Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte, the Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation Kristina Vogt, the Senator for Construction, Mobility and Urban Development Özlem Ünsal, the DB Board Member for Digitalization and Technology Dr. Daniela Gerd tom Markotten, the Managing Director of Production at DB Vehicle Maintenance Nico Petersen and Ronald Ditte as representatives of the employees at the DB plant in Bremen. They are thus continuing previous agreements to strengthen and secure the future of the DB plant in Bremen.

Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte, President of the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen: “I am very pleased that today we are taking a significant step together to secure the future of the Bremen maintenance plant and thus offering many highly qualified employees good prospects. This is not only good for the employees and their families, it is also good for the environment. In the future, the maintenance facility will rely entirely on climate-friendly drive technology. What is being created here is a calling card for Bremen as a technology location.”

Dr. Daniela Gerd tom Markotten, DB Board Member for Digitalization and Technology: “Climate protection is part of Deutsche Bahn’s core brand. We are replacing fossil fuels such as diesel with environmentally friendly alternatives. Pioneering projects like the one here in Bremen are helping us and the rail sector to operate today’s engines with future fuels such as hydrogen. This means we do not have to put functioning trains and locomotives on the sidelines prematurely. This saves resources and makes economic sense.”

Kristina Vogt, Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen: “In Bremen, we are bringing together future technologies such as alternative drives, 3D printing and digital factory processes. Together with Deutsche Bahn and partners from science and business, we are not only driving the change to a climate-friendly industry, but are also strengthening the region – with new ideas, strong cooperation and good jobs. In this way, we are making Bremen fit for the industry of tomorrow and showing that climate neutrality and innovation are possible and feasible together.”

Özlem Ünsal, Senator for Construction, Mobility and Urban Development of the Free and Hanseatic City of Bremen: “With this groundbreaking project, we are strengthening Bremen’s position as a pioneer for innovative and sustainable mobility. The conversion of existing drives to climate-friendly technologies is a key element of the transport transition and shows that we are actively shaping the future of our transport systems!”

The Bremen plant is the competence center for the maintenance and overhaul of diesel engines and drive systems (power packs) within the DB vehicle maintenance network. There has been close cooperation with the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen since 2018. It forms the framework for investments already made and still planned by DB of over four million euros – including the construction of a new transshipment hall, the modernization of a test cell for drive systems and the renewal of the engine washing system. These are flanked by research transfer projects funded by the State of Bremen.
