“Green Airport Memmingen” – under this motto, Memmingen Airport has been working on a sustainable aviation infrastructure for some time. Airport Energie Management GmbH (AEM), founded in 2017 as a joint subsidiary of Allgäu Airport GmbH & Co. KG and e-con AG, plays a central role in this.
After the construction of a heating plant powered by regional biogas and an electric charging station near the terminal, the construction of a publicly accessible hydrogen filling station has now begun, the AEM reported.
It is scheduled to go into operation this year and will be able to supply hydrogen-powered vehicles of various types, including trucks, garbage and construction vehicles, buses, cars, and special airport vehicles. Up to 250 tons of green hydrogen will be delivered annually at operating pressures of 350 and 700 bar.
Filling up with hydrogen is one thing, producing hydrogen is another: This is why Airport Energie Management GmbH is working on another major project, for which it recently received valuable support. A new electrolysis plant is expected to produce up to 1,300 tons of green hydrogen annually starting in 2027, which will supply not only the new filling station, but also regional companies and, in the long term, air traffic, which is expected to rely on sustainable fuel. Bavaria’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, recently presented the corresponding funding certificates. As part of the Bavarian funding program for electrolyzers, five million euros are being invested in the project at Memmingen Airport. According to Aiwanger, the new plants, for which around 150 million euros have been made available across Bavaria, are intended to enable a sustainable electrolyzer infrastructure in the Free State.
