Toray Industries, Inc., announced  that it has received a 2025 Excellence Appreciation Award *1 from Honda Motor Co., Ltd., for the Torayca™ GDL *2 used in the fuel cell stack of the CR-V e:FCEV *3, a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle launched in July 2024. The commemorative trophy presentation ceremony was held at Toray’s headquarters in Tokyo on June 19.

Honda was impressed with the Torayca™ GDL’s gas diffusion and strength, which enhances fuel cell stack performance and durability while saving space. Another factor in Toray’s recognition as an outstanding supplier was the Torayca™ GDL’s excellent removal of water generated from redox reactions *4, helping to keep hydrogen and air flow paths clear to boost fuel cell durability and performance.

Toray began developing the carbon paper base material for the Torayca™ GDL in 1982, commercializing it in 2000. The company has developed the Torayca™ GDL since 2008, with Honda employing it in the Clarity Fuel Cell model *5, produced from 2016 through 2021. Toray thereafter designed a more durable, higher-performance Torayca™ GDL for the CR-V e:FCEV. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce no carbon dioxide emissions from the tailpipe. The market for these automobiles should expand in coming years as economies transition to hydrogen society. Toray will keep developing materials that support automotive electrification, helping cut carbon dioxide emissions across entire vehicle life cycles.

One goal of the Toray Group Sustainability Vision for 2050 is to contribute to a world where resources are sustainably managed. The company will continue pursuing R&D into groundbreaking materials that can drive fundamental change in keeping with its commitment to contributing to society through the creation of new value with innovative ideas, technologies and products.
