HDF Energy Secures Environmental Authorisations for Several Hydrogen Projects in South Africa

The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has granted six Environmental Authorisations for  Renewstable® Mpumalanga projects — a key step towards full permitting.

About the projects:

– 1,782 hectares awarded under the Eskom MWP1247GX land lease tender (2022)

– 8 large-scale Renewstable® hydrogen power plants strategically located near Eskom’s Majuba & Tutuka coal-fired stations in the Mpumalanga province

– South Africa’s first large-scale green hydrogen initiatives

– Potentially the largest  green hydrogen power plants in the world

These plants will deliver 24/7, baseload renewable power to 1.4 million inhabitants by integrating solar energy with large-scale on-site energy storage in the form of green hydrogen — reinforcing grid reliability and advancing South Africa’s transition to a cleaner energy future. They are positioned to contribute meaningfully to national energy security and economic development priorities.
