Hopium Sales its First 200 kW Fuel Cell System for the Maritime Sector

Hopium, the cleantech company aiming to decarbonize heavy-duty transport, announces the signing of its first sale of a fuel cell system for a maritime application to a French customer.

The contract covers the supply of a marinized 200 kW fuel cell system, intended to equip a semi-rigid vessel equipped with an electric motor with a power equivalent to 600 horsepower. Beyond the size, lightness, and performance of Hopium’s fuel cell, the modularity of its system offers the advantage of being able to adapt to the shape of the boat’s hull. These strategic advantages enabled Hopium to meet all the requirements imposed by the specifications. Designed for high-intensity operations, this boat will benefit from hydrogen propulsion combining performance, compactness, and energy efficiency.

The system supplied will be pre-assembled in Saint-Bonnet-de-Mure, at Hopium’s industrial site in eastern Lyon, integrating all the necessary subsystems (thermal management, hydrogen, power, control) in order to test and validate a simplified “Plug & Play” installation on the boat.

This first sale will allow Hopium to benefit from feedback on the use of its fuel cell in a maritime environment. Indeed, the fuel cell system will be equipped with numerous sensors that will enable the collection of a multitude of daily data during its use in real-life conditions, which will benefit both the client’s and Hopium’s teams. “This first achievement in the maritime sector demonstrates the maturity of our technology and our ability to adapt it to complex and demanding environments. This is a major milestone for Hopium, illustrating the relevance of our phased deployment strategy, initially targeting niche markets such as maritime, which are already awaiting hydrogen solutions, and ensuring we have high-performance technology for the mass market of heavy-duty vehicles by 2030. These pioneering segments allow us to validate our systems in extreme conditions, strengthen their reliability, and accelerate their technological maturity,” said Stéphane Rabatel, CEO of Hopium. The name of the client and the detailed specifications of the project in question will be jointly revealed by Hopium and the client before the end of September 2025 at a dedicated event.
