Axpo Iberia and TURN2X have announced the signing of an innovative PPA for the production of green gas produced through electrolysis, which represents a turning point in the Spanish and European energy markets. In an unprecedented milestone for the energy transition in Spain, Axpo, TURN2X, and Aquila Clean Energy have announced the signing of the first contract of its kind for an electrolyzer already producing renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RNG). This agreement marks a significant step forward in the decarbonization of hard-to-electrify industrial sectors and in meeting European climate goals.
The module, operated by TURN2X, is the first in Spain to produce RNG methane gas. It uses renewable electricity supplied by Axpo, which manages the supply from plants developed by Aquila Clean Energy, to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) compliant with European standards using TURN2X’s innovative, patented process. This process combines green hydrogen, generated from water electrolysis, with captured biogenic CO2, resulting in a sustainable fuel that can be transported through existing gas infrastructure. This approach not only contributes to the decarbonization of hard-to-electrify industries, such as energy-intensive industries (ceramics, steel) or the maritime sector, but also strengthens Europe’s energy independence.
The agreement, a pioneer in its format, was made possible thanks to the collaboration between Axpo Iberia, an independent energy marketer; TURN2X, a company specializing in e-methane solutions, which will operate the plant powered exclusively by renewable electricity; and Aquila Clean Energy, the producer of the necessary renewable electricity. The collaboration between the three parties has been key to adapting the European RFNBO fuel certification process to the specificities of Spain.
