Scania unveils its first hydrogen fuel cell truck at transportCH in Bern

Scania unveiled its first hydrogen-powered fuel cell truck at this year’s transportCH trade fair in Bern. The vehicle is part of the Scania Pilot Partner Program – another important step towards a fossil-free transport system.

The first truck will be delivered to the Norwegian company Asko Norge AS. Four Swiss companies will follow in the coming months: Emmi Schweiz AG, Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz, TRAVECO Transporte AG, and Retralog AG. They will test the vehicles in everyday use for several years.

With this premiere in Bern, Scania is making a clear statement about progress in sustainable transport technology. At the trade fair, Scania CEO Christian Levin symbolically handed over the keys to the Swiss pilot customers.

Hydrogen complements electrification

The truck presented is based on Scania’s electric powertrain, combined with a fuel cell system. This system converts hydrogen into electrical energy, which powers the electric motor. The only emission is water vapor. The vehicle achieves a range of up to 1,000 kilometers and is being tested in real-world transport operations. The combination of long range, short refueling times, and electrical efficiency makes fuel cells particularly attractive for long-haul transport. With this technology, Scania is expanding its multi-energy strategy – from battery-electric vehicles and biofuels to hydrogen – to enable the transition to fossil-free transport solutions, depending on the application.

Four Swiss companies are leading the way

Emmi Schweiz AG, Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz, TRAVECO Transporte AG, and Retralog AG, four leading Swiss companies, are participating in the Scania Pilot Partner Program. Over the coming months, they will each take delivery of a vehicle and test it in daily use – from distribution to long-haul transport.

These practical tests will demonstrate how the technology performs in different applications. The insights gained will help to better assess the practical benefits, efficiency, and economic viability of hydrogen technology.

Scania Pilot Partner – Testing Innovation in Everyday Life

The Scania Pilot Partner program offers a platform for joint development, testing, and exchange. Together with selected customers, Scania tests new drive and energy solutions under real-world conditions – from battery electric vehicles and biofuels to hydrogen.

Through these partnerships, we gather valuable practical experience. This experience is directly incorporated into the further development of production-ready products. In this way, we ensure that new solutions not only work technically – but also deliver in everyday use.
