Hoogeveen is ready to connect the first homes to hydrogen

Hoogeveen is working on a unique trial: heating homes using hydrogen instead of natural gas. Alderman Jeroen Westendorp: “In the Hydrogen Hoogeveen (Waterstof Hoogeveen) project, we are investigating whether hydrogen can be a good, safe, and affordable alternative to natural gas, in existing homes in the Erflanden region and new homes in Nijstad-Oost.” The experiences in Hoogeveen have already provided valuable lessons for future projects in the Netherlands. Westendorp: “We are very pleased that we have now reached the point where all the signals are green: we will soon be equipping the first home in Erflanden with a hydrogen central heating boiler.”

A year of learning and improving

Initially, it was difficult to properly infuse hydrogen with the odorant needed to detect any leaks. After extensive research and the necessary technical improvements, this odor system now works as intended. The installation will be completed in the coming weeks, so the system is ready for use in the Hydrogen District.

Forward Together

Westendorp: “This is an important step for the residents of the Hydrogen District. Their patience has been tested for a long time, but now the connection of the first nine homes to hydrogen can truly begin. We greatly appreciate the residents’ patience, and we have therefore invited them to a celebratory communal meal at the Hydrogen Tiny House to celebrate that we have reached this point.”

Next Phase

After the first nine homes are connected, in the first quarter of 2026, we will work towards the next step: the potential expansion to approximately 100 homes in the Erflanden neighborhood. Residents will receive information about this and can share their opinions through a survey. The municipal council will use these responses to decide on the next phase.
