The European Commission awarded 263.1 million euros in subsidies to three Spanish projects to produce green hydrogen, as part of the first EU auction of aid to promote this energy vector in the EU.
The largest is the Catalina project, which aims to produce 480 kilotonnes (kt) of hydrogen in 10 years between Aragon and Valencia, and received 230.4 million euros in EU funds.
The European Commission also selected the Andalusian El Alamillo project, which aims to produce 65 kt of green hydrogen and will receive 24.6 million euros, while the Hysencia initiative, which aims to produce 17 kt of green hydrogen in Aragon, won 8.1 million euros in European aid.
The seven winning auctions are those that require the least financial support per kilogram, all of which are between 0.37 and 0.48 euros of European funds per kilogram of hydrogen, and were selected from 132 bids, the Commission said in a statement.
Specifically, El Alamillo’s bid was 0.38 euros per kilo and those of Hysencia and Catalina were 0.48 euros.
