thyssenkrupp Steel has issued a call for tenders to supply hydrogen to the first direct reduction plant

thyssenkrupp Steel has officially launched its call for tenders to supply hydrogen to its first direct reduction plant. In conjunction with two innovative melters, this is the centerpiece of the first transformation step in thyssenkrupp’s decarbonization process as part of the tkH2Steel project. The hydrogen requirement is being put out to tender in a transparent and broad-based procedure, with the aim of operating the direct reduction plant fully on hydrogen by as early as 2029. The call for tenders is being organized in close coordination with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), which, together with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is funding the innovative plant project and the associated hydrogen ramp-up to the tune of around two billion euros. This will make it possible to cease using natural gas at an early stage, while at the same time firing the starting pistol for the hydrogen ramp-up in Germany.

The direct reduction plant, in conjunction with the two downstream melters, will be integrated into Europe’s biggest iron and steel plant as a technologically new plant combination. It will be possible to retain all subsequent process steps from the steel mill onward. The 100% hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant has an annual production capacity of 2.5 million metric tons of directly reduced iron. The first use of hydrogen in the plant combination is planned for 2028, with the ramp-up to full hydrogen operation to be completed in 2029. The use of around 143,000 metric tons of hydrogen (equivalent to 5.6 terawatt hours) will enable up to 3.5 million metric tons of CO2 to be saved per year. As the largest German hydrogen consumer, thyssenkrupp Steel will thus function as the initiator of and driving force behind a hydrogen economy, paving the way for the decarbonization of the entire steel value chain.

MOL Teams up with  Woodside, HD KSOE and Hyundai Glovis to Study Transport of Liquefied Hydrogen

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., announced the signing of a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Woodside Energy Ltd (Woodside), a major Australian energy company and shipbuilding and engineering company HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. and shipping company Hyundai Glovis Co., Ltd., both of South Korea, to jointly study the development of shipping solutions to enable bulk marine transportation of liquid hydrogen, which the three companies have been pursuing since 2022.

Hydrogen, a lower-carbon energy source, is attracting a great deal of attention as the world seeks to move toward decarbonisation. Demand for the transport of liquefied hydrogen is expected to rise in the coming decades.

In this project, the participating companies will study the technology, safety, construction, operation, and economics of a carrier with 80,000 m3 tank capacity, with the aim of establishing a liquefied hydrogen supply chain in Asia and other regions. If a project results from the MoU, the parties’ aspiration is to have the vessel built and in operation by 2030. The liquefied hydrogen carrier would, under its concept design, use hydrogen as its main fuel, which is anticipated to significantly reduce CO2 emissions during operation.

Liquefied hydrogen takes up about 1/800th the volume of hydrogen gas. While liquefied hydrogen is non-toxic and can be transported safely and efficiently, it must be cooled to -253°C, which requires advanced technology. Woodside, HD KSOE, and Hyundai Glovis have evaluated MOL’s expertise gained through decades of experience in transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its various efforts to address decarbonization issues, and approached the company to cooperate in this study, leading to the conclusion of the MoU.
