Liquid Wind, together with international decarbonization leaders and partners Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy and Topsoe, announce the eFuel Design & Performance Centre (DPC) in Hørsholm, Denmark.

The shared eFuel DPC is the first of its kind, with a joint research and development (R&D) department, where all five partners will collaborate and innovate to accelerate facility deployment. It will be instrumental in developing and refining the technical expertise required to build eMethanol plants in a manner that is rapid, efficient and cost-effective, so they can be deployed at scale globally. By leveraging partners’ innovative technologies and modular solutions, the DPC will deliver ready-to-build eMethanol plants that are quicker to fabricate, transport, construct and commission.

The DPC is a major milestone that will further accelerate the design and implementation of eFuel facilities capable of supplying a nominal 100,000 tons of eMethanol per year. Three projects are currently under development in the Nordics, including FlagshipONE, the world’s first commercial scale eMethanol facility, and the goal is to develop up to ten additional plants by the end of 2027. The plants will significantly contribute to the global eMethanol market and future emissions reduction in hard-to-abate industries, such as global shipping.

Universal Hydrogen Completes First Full Demonstration of AmpCart H2

Universal Hydrogen Co., a hydrogen fuel services provider that uses unique modular hydrogen delivery technology,  announced the first operational demonstration of the AmpCart H2 product developed in collaboration with Oshkosh AeroTech (formerly JBT AeroTech). On track for operational deployment by the end of 2024, the Universal Hydrogen demonstration unit of the future Oshkosh AeroTech’s AmpCart H2 marks a significant step in decarbonizing airport ground operations. The AmpCart H2 provides a near-term solution to the shortage of charging infrastructure for electric ground support equipment at airports. It is uniquely enabled by Universal Hydrogen’s modular fueling technology that alleviates the need for purpose-built hydrogen fueling infrastructure and enables every airport to be hydrogen-ready.

The recent operational demonstration at Hawthorne Airport in Los Angeles involved the charging of two DHL electrified tractors using a mobile AmpCart H2 prototype and portable hydrogen storage modules. Hawthorne is the fifth airport at which Universal Hydrogen has successfully utilized hydrogen on airport grounds, paving the path to hydrogen acceptance as an aviation fuel. Hydrogen modules are fueled with green hydrogen off-airport (typically near the point of hydrogen production) and transferred to the airport landside with existing intermodal freight. From there, the modules are loaded onto a trailer for safe and efficient transportation to any location airside of the airport, facilitating flexible and opportunistic charging of electric GSE between operations. This approach optimizes GSE operations, minimizes equipment downtime, and is scalable from small regional airports to major hubs.

Kawasaki Awarded Order for High-Pressure Hydrogen Regulators for a New Fuel Cell City Bus in Germany

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced that it has been adopted for high-pressure hydrogen regulators to be used in a new fuel cell city bus by one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in Germany.

The product plays the important role of reducing the pressure of hydrogen gas, which is supplied from a hydrogen tank installed on the fuel cell bus at a high pressure of approximately 350 atmospheres, until the pressure reaches a level where the gas can be used in the fuel cell stack.

This regulator contributes to space savings and increased range by improving fuel efficiency. This is achieved by enabling efficient reduction of hydrogen gas pressure using high-precision gas control technology, and by stabilizing hydrogen gas pressure during power generation. At the same time, it offers superior reliability, having cleared durability tests that suggest a life of 20 years.

This high-pressure hydrogen regulator is the fruit of Kawasaki’s technological capabilities and experience built up over the years on hydrogen products. Kawasaki successfully manufactured and supplied this product to a client for a mass production fuel cell vehicle in 2018. Based on the client’s high evaluation of Kawasaki’s contributions to the fuel cell vehicle, reliability and overall high-level technological capabilities at the time, Kawasaki has earned the client’s trust and confidence, which led to the recent adoption for use in the new fuel cell city bus.

First Hydrogen’s green hydrogen vehicle trials commence with Wales &West Utilities

Automotive and green energy developer, First Hydrogen has started one month of vehicle trials with gas distribution network, Wales & West Utilities (WWU).

First Hydrogen’s hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle (FCEV) has been designed to meet the needs of fleet operators, such as WWU, who are seeking a zero emissions vehicle that can manage long distances, carry heavy payloads and tow, with fast refuelling. First Hydrogen’s FCEV achieves more than 630km or 400 miles on a single refuelling.

WWU is the gas emergency and pipeline service for Wales and the south west of England and operates 24 hours a day, year-round to deliver vital gas network services for more than 7.5 million customers. The First Hydrogen trials are taking place during winter, WWU’s busiest period for emergency gas call outs. Typically, cold temperatures can reduce the range for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), affecting reliability for fleet operators. Depending on the weather over the next month, the trials could also generate data to indicate the FCEV’s advantage over BEVs in lower temperatures.
