Técnicas Reunidas will expand the H2toGreenCeramics project with the support of the regional government of Valencia

Técnicas Reunidas has taken another step forward in its strategy, materialised through its track proposal, to promote the implementation of its decarbonisation solutions not only in the energy sector, but also in other sectors that urgently need to reduce their emissions, such as cement, steel and, in this case, ceramics.

The company leads H2toGreenCeramics, a decarbonisation project using green hydrogen that was selected a few days ago by the Valencian Regional Government to be included in the Aid Programme for strategic industrial projects in the region.

The objective of H2toGreenCeramics is the development of alkaline electrolysers for the decarbonisation of the ceramic cluster of the Valencian Community.

The project will allow the partial substitution of the non-renewable energies used in its combustion processes in the ceramics sector, one of the sectors that requires the highest energy consumption in its production, by the use of green hydrogen obtained from the electrolysis of water.

The result of this substitution will therefore be a substantial reduction in dependence on non-renewable resources and an important contribution to the decarbonisation of the Valencian ceramics industry, one of the most important in the Valencian Community.

The work, which will be carried out until December 2025, will be undertaken by Técnicas Reunidas with the collaboration of two technology centres, a company dedicated to the manufacture of frit kilns and burners, and a frit producing company that is an end user.

In this way, the project will close the process value chain, as it will cover from the production of renewable hydrogen by means of electrolysis to its use in an industrial application.

The project has a budget of 2,125,303.99 €, of which 850,121.60 € will be financed by the Regional Ministry of Innovation, Industry, Trade and Tourism of the Valencian Community within the framework of the aforementioned Aid Programme.

The first tile fired in a 100% hydrogen kiln? It’s from SACMI

SACMI’s Kiln Lab conducts the first firing trials using self-produced pure hydrogen as fuel. Another first for SACMI and a concrete step towards the climate neutrality goals of the ceramics industry.

Following the Ceramic Innovation Open Week where the new 100% hydrogen kiln prototype was unveiled to the world, SACMI’s Kiln Lab has successfully completed the first firing tests using self-produced pure hydrogen as fuel.

This is the result of a 3-year journey that has led:

  • to the construction of the pure hydrogen production and storage station at SACMI’s Forni & Filter site in Salvaterra, complete with electrolyser, storage cylinders and mixing unit.
  • to the construction of the prototype furnace, which has been commissioned in recent weeks. The furnace is designed to operate with variable mixtures of hydrogen and methane, up to 100% hydrogen.

As the first company in the world to develop and market an industrial kiln capable of firing mixtures of up to 50% methane and hydrogen (FMH Maestro), SACMI has set a new record.  On the 23rd of October, the first tile fired with a 100% pure hydrogen mixture was produced and proudly ‘signed’ by the Laboratory team.

“This is an extraordinary achievement that marks a milestone for our industry towards a zero-emissions future,” says SACMI President Paolo Mongardi. “Special thanks go to our technicians who have worked on this project with passion and tenacity”.

The next steps? “From this moment on, a new phase begins,” explains Daniele Baldini, product manager at Kilns & Dryers, BU Tiles, SACMI. “Thanks to the availability of hydrogen from our storage station, we will be able to carry out all the tests on real products using variable fuel mixtures. Our primary goal remains to guarantee product quality. In the meantime, we are very satisfied with this result “.

SACMI research doesn’t stop here. After the first full H oven prototype, and together with the production trials to test the effectiveness of the prototype in different production conditions and with different mixtures, the development of a totally electric oven will begin, to explore this path towards climate neutrality of ceramic processes.

Mitsubishi Power Delivers First Shipment of Equipment to ACES Delta Hub for Clean Hydrogen Production

print_ico.svg

Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. has delivered the first shipment of major equipment for its HydaptiveTM integrated hydrogen production plant forming part of the Advanced Clean Energy Storage Hub (ACES Delta Hub) in Delta, UT.

Mitsubishi Power’s delivery of equipment is being coordinated with the onsite construction schedule to optimize the overall project timeline. Once completed, the system at ACES Delta Hub will nearly double the annual production levels of clean hydrogen worldwide.

The ACES Delta Hub, a joint project led by Mitsubishi Power Americas and Chevron U.S.A. Inc.’s New Energies Company (formerly Magnum Development), is a large-scale, world-class clean hydrogen facility designed to produce, store, and deliver green hydrogen to the western U.S. The hub will initially be capable of converting 220 MW of renewable energy into almost 100 tonnes per day of green hydrogen, which will then be stored in two massive salt caverns, having a storage capacity of more than 300 GWh of dispatchable clean energy. These salt caverns are located within the only major geologic salt dome formation in the western U.S.

A pipeline from the ACES Delta Hub will supply hydrogen to the nearby Intermountain Power Agency’s “IPP Renewed” power plant project to achieve seasonal, dispatchable renewable energy storage utilizing two advanced-class Mitsubishi Power J-series gas turbines. The turbines will use up to 30 percent hydrogen blended with natural gas at start-up, with a goal of transitioning up to 100 percent hydrogen by 2045 or sooner, thereby resulting in carbon-free utility-scale power generation. Together, the high-performance turbines have a capacity of 840 MW of electricity generation.

“The integrated HydaptiveTM technologies will empower our customers to produce cost effective hydrogen at scale, and facilitate the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. This equipment delivery represents just one of many significant milestones as we move closer toward completion of the ACES Delta Hub,” said Kent Rockaway, Vice President, Hydrogen Production, Mitsubishi Power Americas.”
