Victorian Government invests in Dovetail Electric Aviation, developing a hydrogen-electric propulsion system

Victorian Government (Australia) announced a financial investment to support the development roadmap of Dovetail Electric Aviation, contributing to materialising Dovetail’s mission to bring electric aviation to market as early as 2026, the company said. The Hon Harriet Shing MP in her capacity as Member for Eastern Victoria made the groundbreaking announcement.

Invest Victoria, the Victorian Government’s lead investment attraction and promotion agency, is offering non-dilutive financial support to Dovetail Electric Aviation. This support is aimed at furthering Dovetail’s efforts in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) and fostering economic development through the advancement of an emerging sector.

Owing to the support received from the Victorian Government, Dovetail’s Australian Headquarters (HQ) have been relocated from NSW to Victoria, where Dovetail has both presence at Melbourne and Latrobe.

The announcement took place at Latrobe Regional Airport at the new ‘Latrobe Aerospace Technology Precinct’ AAM sandbox, where Dovetail Electric Aviation has been conducting tests on its innovative propulsion system, featuring a hydrogen fuel cell. This groundbreaking technology represents a historic milestone in Australian aviation, with Dovetail Electric Aviation leading the country’s Advanced Air Mobility sector by becoming the first company to develop and test a hydrogen-electric propulsion system specifically designed for aviation.

Topsoe Announces Plans for New State-of-the-Art US Electrolyzer Factory for Clean Hydrogen

 Topsoe, a global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies, announced plans to build a cutting-edge factory in Chesterfield, Virginia. The factory will manufacture advanced, energy efficient Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOEC) that are essential to the efficient production of clean hydrogen and derivatives like eAmmonia and eMethanol.

The decision by Topsoe to announce its plan for its largest investment in the US to date comes after the company received an allocation for nearly $136 million in federal Section 48C tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act.

Subject to Final Investment Decision, this more than $400M investment is expected to create at least 150 direct jobs in Virginia and more than 1,000 indirect jobs through the value chain.

With a planned capacity of more than 1 GW, the factory’s output of electrolyzer stacks will enable an annual greenhouse gas emission avoidance of up to 2 million tonnes CO2e – the equivalent of avoiding the emissions from more than 400,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for a year.

Verne announces the new funding to develop of their cryo-compressed hydrogen technology for heavy-duty vehicles

Verne, a leading developer of high-density hydrogen storage systems,  announced a strategic fundraise led by Trucks Venture Capital, with participation from existing investors Collaborative Fund and Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, and new investors United Airlines Ventures Sustainable Flight Fund and Newlab. The new funding will enable Verne to accelerate development of their cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2) technology for on-board hydrogen storage for heavy-duty vehicles. The investment brings Verne’s total funding to $15.5M including grant funding.

Verne’s cryo-compressed hydrogen technology involves cooling and compressing hydrogen to achieve the maximum hydrogen density at 73 g/L internal density, a 33% improvement over liquid hydrogen and an 87% improvement over traditional 700 bar compressed gas hydrogen. The increased density leads to greater range and payload: Verne’s technology enables semi-trucks to achieve diesel-equivalent range, or over 900 miles, without adding any weight to the system.

zepp.solutions revealed the assembly of a hydrogen-powered generator set for stationary aircraft

“The assembly of the H2GPU by Dynell GmbH is taking shape, the zepp. solutions announced under the photo.. “This hydrogen-powered generator set for stationary aircraft features a zepp.solutions 50kW Y50 fuel cell system. Zepp also developed the hydrogen storage system storing 16.8 kg of hydrogen. Combined with the 84 kWh onboard battery, the GPU can deliver up to 350 kWh of electrical energy”.

The FCH2RAIL’ s hydrogen train carried out tests on the Portuguese railway network

The FCH2RAIL consortium has successfully completed testing in Portugal, the company said. Between 3 and 6 April, the H2 train travelled on the Minho Line between Valença and Nine stations, making it the first hydrogen train in Portugal. With these tests, the FCH2RAIL project achieved a great milestone, having obtained the authorization to run the train demonstrator in a second European country.

To carry out these tests, Infraestruturas de Portugal issued the Special Circulation Authorisation in December 2023, establishing the conditions for the train’s operation on the Portuguese rail network during the testing phase. The tests performed in Portugal are part of the extended testing campaign initiated in May 2023 on the Spanish railway network. Now, after the testing in Portugal, the train has already travelled more than 8500 km in hydrogen mode.

Linde to Increase Green Hydrogen Production in Brazil

Linde announced its subsidiary White Martins will build, own and operate a second electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen for the southeast region of Brazil.

The five-megawatt pressurized alkaline electrolyzer plant will be located next to the company’s existing air separation facility in Jacareí, São Paulo. The new plant will be powered by renewable energy from local solar and wind power projects to produce independently certified green hydrogen.

Once operational, White Martins’ new plant will supply green hydrogen to glass manufacturer Cebrace to reduce emissions from their glass melting furnaces in Jacareí. It will also meet demand for competitive green hydrogen from existing and new customers across industrial sectors including metals, food and chemicals, among others. The new plant is expected to start up in 2025.

Cabot Selected for $5M in U.S. Department of Energy Grant to Support the Deployment of Fuel Cells

Cabot Corporation announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, selected its application for a $5 million research grant. This grant will be used by Cabot and its partners to support the deployment of fuel cells, which emit only water when creating electricity.

The project will focus on developing an innovative and scalable manufacturing process for producing specialized carbon black that can be used as carbon catalyst supports for fuel cells. This technology will support and accelerate the establishment of a domestic catalyst supply chain, by providing a reliable source of high-performance carbon catalyst support.

Cabot is the lead recipient on the project titled, “Scalable, Innovative Manufacturing Process for Novel Carbon Supports for Metal Catalysts for Medium and Heavy-Duty Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells.” Building on Cabot’s strengths in carbon black particle production and engineering, especially in developing and commercializing carbon catalyst supports for fuel cells, this project will be deployed through collaborative research with Johnson Matthey, a leading manufacturer of catalysts and associated assemblies as well as Bosch, a leading fuel cell stack manufacturer and the University of California, Irvine, a leading research university in fuel cell technology.

University of Hartford Installed the Stationary Fuel Cells from HyAxiom

As part of the University of Hartford’s sustainability program, the school has partnered with HyAxiom, a leading global fuel cell and hydrogen solutions provider, to install four stationary fuel cells on the southeastern side of the campus.

The power plants are HyAxiom’s flagship product, the PureCell® M400, a proprietary phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC)that produces clean energy and heat with a significantly reduced carbon footprint when compared to conventional power plants and can easily be converted to use hydrogen as a fuel. Commissioned in 2020 and recognized globally, the 50 MW (114 units) Daesan hydrogen fuel cell plant in Korea is the world’s first and only commercial stationary power plant running solely on hydrogen.

This project is owned and operated by DESA Service LLC, a subsidiary of Doosan Energy Solutions America Inc.

Helen’s plans for the 3H2 Helsinki Hydrogen Hub project underscore its dedication to green hydrogen production, aimed at serving both the transport sector and industrial users. With an eye on large-scale hydrogen production, the initiative is poised to enhance the flexibility of Helsinki’s entire energy system. Notably, the project is designed to harness all waste heat generated during hydrogen production, integrating it into Helen’s district heating network, thereby embodying the principles of energy efficiency and flexibility, and reducing CO2 emissions.

Power to Hydrogen to test groundbreaking technology in the port of Antwerp-Bruges 

Power to Hydrogen wants to accelerate the transition to a green hydrogen economy through AEM (anion exchange membrane) electrolysis. This advanced technology is a potential solution to drastically reduce the cost of green hydrogen production using renewable energy. The technology has never been applied on an industrial scale before, and the AEM electrolysis stack for the NextGen demo project, which will be installed in the fourth quarter of 2024, will be the largest in the world. This demonstration is also being financially supported by global utility leaders, including American Electric Power, EDP, E.ON, and ESB as part of the Free Electrons utility innovation program.

Port of Antwerp-Bruges has cleared an area with a total surface of 88 hectares for NextGen District with the ambition to establish a hotspot for the circular economy. NextGen Demo is a zone of about 2 hectares within this cluster in the heart of the Antwerp industry, where demonstrators (start-ups and scale-ups, spin-off companies, and pilot projects) can test new technologies and circular demo projects that have outgrown the lab, on a larger scale and in an industrial environment before moving to commercialization.

Amogy  to deploy ammonia-to-electrical power system on construction sites in Norway 

Amogy, a provider of mature, scalable, and efficient ammonia-to-power solutions, announced an order from Norwegian Terox to deploy Amogy’s ammonia-to-electrical power system to generate electricity on construction sites. This collaboration will position Terox as a leader in zero-carbon electricity production in construction and will mark a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions for Norway’s construction industry.

Amogy’s 400 kW containerized solution will be installed in a 20ft container, which generates off-grid electricity to charge a battery bank. This battery bank then connects to a mobile supercharger that charges Terox’s fleet of electric heavy-duty construction vehicles.

Stargate Hydrogen to unveil their new stack for green hydrogen production

Stargate Hydrogen( headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia),manufacturer of electrolysers for green hydrogen production, announces the launch of their new Alkaline Electrolysis Stack during the World Hydrogen Summit from 13th to 15th May 2024 in Rotterdam.

The electrolysis stack, named Stellar 100, is manufactured in Europe and has a production capacity of up to 100Nm3/h, which means that every hour it produces enough energy to power a car for 1000 km, the company stated.

Its patented design was developed by Stargate in cooperation with leading European suppliers and tested by ZSW, a renowned German research institute.

CSX Unveils Its First Hydrogen-Powered Locomotive in Collaboration with CPKC

CSX, based in Jacksonville, Florida, a premier transportation company, has unveiled its first hydrogen-powered locomotive, marking a significant milestone in sustainable freight transportation, the company announced.This pioneering achievement is the result of a successful partnership between CSX and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.

The hydrogen locomotive was converted from an existing diesel locomotive using a hydrogen conversion kit developed by CPKC. The transformation took place at the CSX locomotive shop in Huntington, W.Va.

Feintool wins important contract in Europe’s hydrogen industry

The company is tasked with the production of high-precision metal components for fuel cells and electrolyzers, the Feintool announced.

The contract, which was awarded by a renowned European company specializing in fuel cells and electrolysers, involves the series supply of several components, including high-precision flow field plates. Initially, the order volume is expected to reach several million euros per year.

TNSC has successfully tested hydrogen production from ammonia for fuel cell vehicles

Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation , a Japanese industrial gas business company in the Nippon Sanso Holdings Group, announced its successful demonstration of production of hydrogen from ammonia that meets the quality specifications (ISO 14687:2019 Grade D) required for hydrogen fuel for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs).

TNSC has established a technology to produce hydrogen gas with less than 100 ppm nitrogen and less than 1 ppm methane by purifying a mixed gas of 25% nitrogen, 0.1% methane, and 74.9% hydrogen.

Norwegian Hydrogen and Provaris extend collaboration for the development of new hydrogen export sites in the Nordics

Provaris Energy Ltd and Norwegian Hydrogen AS  announced a new Collaboration Agreement (Agreement) to jointly progress the identification and development of several sites in the Nordic region for the large-scale production and export of hydrogen to European markets.

The projects will utilize locally available renewable energy to produce hydrogen for shipment to European ports. This will assist energy-intensive industries in making an impact on their decarbonization plans and target a scale and level of innovation that aligns with various European Union funding schemes.

New projects will be strategically located in areas with robust grid connections and power supplies. These sites will facilitate the construction of state-of-the-art electrolyzers, and hydrogen compression facilities linked to export jetties. Provaris’ H2Neo carriers will transport the hydrogen, while the H2Leo barge will serve for storage. The initiatives will also foster circular economies by utilizing by-products like clean oxygen and waste heat in local industries and district heating systems.

Kawasaki revealed details about hydrogen-powered Buggy HySE-X1 participated in Dakar Rally 2024

The HySE-X1 hydrogen-powered buggy developed by HySE, a hydrogen small mobility and engine technology research association in which Kawasaki Motors and Kawasaki Heavy Industries are involved, participated in the Dakar Rally held in Saudi Arabia in January 2024. Despite it being its first attempt at the Dakar, it managed to make it to the final stage. The engine at its heart is a hydrogen-fueled engine based on the supercharged engine used in Kawasaki Motors’ Ninja H2 series.

The HySE-X1 was developed over a short period of time. It came together about six months after the establishment of HySE itself, and just three months after HySE announced that its entry in the race.

FuelPositive has completed tests of the on-farm Containerized Green Ammonia system

FuelPositive Corporation, a leading Green Ammonia announced that the Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) was successfully completed by FuelPositive’s farmer-partner and advisor, Curtis Hiebert, from Sperling, Manitoba and shipment of the world’s first FuelPositive FP300 system has commenced.

Curtis Hiebert took time out of his busy spring season schedule to visit the team at FuelPositive’s new small-batch manufacturing facility in Waterloo, Ontario, to complete the FAT and mandatory safety training for the first FP300, which will be delivered on-farm this week. Tracy and Curtis Hiebert were selected as recipient of the World’s first FuelPositive’s demonstration pilot for the FuelPositive’s on-farm Containerized Green Ammonia system.

Several farmers, potential customers, and investors attended on April 10 to meet with FuelPositive’s team to learn more about the Company’s current technology and future projects. This provided a first hand opportunity for farmers to witness the FP300 system in action and gain insights into its capabilities.

Air Products Receives Funding to Build Two Hydrogen Refueling Stations in Germany 

Air Products received funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to build two high-capacity, publicly accessible, low-carbon Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS) in Duisburg and Meckenheim, the company announced.

The two new stations will be located near Air Products’ current German headquarters in Hattingen, where Air Products has operated for more than 60 years. With the funding received, Air Products will build, own and operate the two high-capacity HRSs capable of fueling a range of vehicles including medium and heavy-duty classes. Supplied with the company’s own hydrogen, the refueling stations will offer a network of reliable and fast HRSs for trucks in Germany and ultimately support the ramping up of zero-emission fleets.

Manufacturer of hydrogen dirigible drones raises €3.7M in funding

HyLight, a French company that makes dirigible drones powered by hydrogen fuel cell electric motors, has announced that it has raised €3.7m in funding.

The HyLight blimp drones are designed for aerial inspections including gas pipelines from the position of detecting methane leaks.”Our objective is to inspect more than 5 million kilometres of European energy infrastructure per year by 2030. In 1 year, we have : – Developed 6 iterations of our dirigible drones. – Flown more than 150 hours”, the HyLight stated.

Bill Gates filled a pothole in the road with asphalt produced by a methane hydrogen plant

This plant is owned by Modern Hydrogen (headquartered in Woodinville, Wash), which has developed technology to split natural gas to produce hydrogen. The by-product is solid carbon, which is used to produce the asphalt used by Bill Gates in this case. Modern Hydrogen has built two similar plants and Bill Gates has invested in Modern Hydrogen.

Holthausen Energy Points has started assembling equipment for the construction of a green hydrogen plant in Amsterdam

«In Amsterdam Westpoort, Holthausen Energy Points will soon start placing (building) the first Electrolyser units», Karl Holthausen, Technical officer Holthausen Clean Technology BV & Energy Points BV announced in his LinkedIn.

“A total of 2.5 megawatts will be built, which will be fed with 100% green electricity.Besides feeding our hydrogen filling station, the electrolyser will also feed our H2 packages filling department.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

The photo already shows the first components, which will be placed in special containers.In this way, the Groningen hydrogen company Holthausen is also making Amsterdam a little greener”.
